Title: A quick question regarding the cost of metal tube
Post by: doda456 on October 17, 2009, 21:31:22
Hi people,

I have recently acquired a pair of x lites, and Im considering custom building a metal light bar for my disco, What Im wondering is how much would a length of 2"( or 51mm for you metric people) mild steel pipe cost?

I have no idea about metal cost, so would like a rough idea before i head down the metal dealers,

oh, the length is the width of a disco, so 5, maybe 6 feet,

I appreciate any input you clever people may have,

2 things

dont know about where you are but its difficult for me in norfolk to get 2"(51) i had to settle with 48mm which was actually quite a nice size. but i payed £37 for 8.5m....or it might have been 7.5m length dont remember but that was £37 when all the prices of steel were stupedly high!

and you cant just buy a "length" of scaffold tube as ALL scaff tubes are bought at 21ft and then cut down. and its more than £8, its also a pig to bend and weld!

it was either boss or landymadjay who said they were making rocksliders, perhaps for some £££ they could make you a light bar?

i dont mean to be rude to jay but his fabrication skills are very limited. it was me who is making sliders and i can make you a light bar, the trouble is time and tools. if your willing to wait i can knock you one up

2" is surely a bit overengineered for a light bar? It'll weigh a ton!

the X-lites are designed to clamp onto the tubes of a roll cage, hence the size of tube required, but the can be clamped onto smaller diameter tube.

They also do an Azimuth version which bolts through a hole like many other lights, but given original question it would appear that doda456 got the roll cage type.
