Title: TD5 "pinking"?
Post by: Range Rover Ron on October 19, 2009, 11:33:21
Hello MC'ers,

My TD5 has developed a "pinking" noise.
I call it pinking as that's the closest sound I can relate to,
remember when you had petrol cars with points? (Anglias, Cortinas etc)
if the timing was out a little bit it would make alight rattling noise, called pinking.
My 2000 TD5 is making a very similar noise.
it has 37K miles on the clock.

Any ideas/soloutions???
thanks.........

Just throwing some ideas in,

I had a 'tinny' rattling noise from my TD5 a while back, turned out to be mud shield moving on the front prop/diff joint, but this was obviously when i was moving. Is yours all the time?

Another guess could be the common fault of fan belt pulleys, maybe worth a check?

Hello mate, thanks for the reply,
I get the "pinking" noise only when the engine eases off,
With my foot to the floor it is not there,
when coasting down hill it is not there,
only when I get to the point where I back off the throttle to cruise does it happen.

I'm getting a mighty shudder now as i let the clutch out and have been told that the clutch is the cause of the pinking and shudder.
cheers

this is fitted with a dual mass flywheel and they are notorious for problems judders rattles etc etc convert it to solid flywheel and clutch  assembly if it turns out to be that, end of dual mass problems then :D

Hello gt.jacko,
is the coversion much work?
Much money?
I think if it is the clutch I'd go for a standard one if it is easy to do,
Cheers.

Hello Mc'ers,
found the cause,
the bearing in the diff had disitergrated,
the "pinking" was the bits rattling around!
thanks to everyone for trying to help.
