I refer to the rear silencer on a Discovery 200tdi.
Why the question?
Simple.
Mine fell off the other day. The system is perhaps 3+ years old, the previous one being the original LR system fitted when the beast was built, and as it was an emergency, the bill for the repair was nigh on £150.
So I was bit naffed off when this one went.
Luckily I still had the silencer, so I had a look at it. A straight through type. There was no increase in noise, and the only difference was a slight pong of burnt bio-diesel in the car.
I checked with a mate who is a LR tech bloke and posed the question what be likely to happen if a piece of pipe was welded in place instead of the box?
Response?
No difference at all.
So, a trip to the nearest exhaust centre, a rummage through their scrap bin, pipe acquired, welded on, hey presto. Loads of cash saved, a possible saying on fuel by losing a few pounds in weight, and no breach of the law!
How many other things have been built in to a product that serve no useful purpose whatsoever and could end up costing you cash?
Standby buttons on electrical items. Use the on/off switch.
Air con in soft top cars. You want cold air, lower the roof!
Any others?

Personally I don't think they need either silencer - the diesel train sound effects are great, especially when you hear the turbo spinning up/down! :lol:
Aircon does have a use on soft tops, when you encounter the inevitable horribly humid weather or if you want to drive at 60-70mph when it gets a bit wearing with the roof down for longer journeys.
After my last "LR Genuine" exhaust tail pipe fell off I fitted a stainless one (cat/particulate filter back). It cost about half as much as the LR one and has lasted twice as long so far. The only snag is that I'd quite like to fit a side exit exhaust now, but cutting up a perfectly good stainless steel exhaust doesn't appeal. Maybe I should just get a custom one made with 3" pipe... :twisted:

certainly don't need the center box. Replaced mine with a straight through and the only difference I noticed was the turbo spinning up earlier and I lost that nice whistle sound :-(

I had one better than that; the exhaust fell apart on my RR so the last boxes were not connected and the gas came out the middle.
Classic as I only found out at the MOT - it made so little difference I just didn't know.
The best bit though I only twigged afterwards;the first part of the MOT is the emissions tests, no wonder I passed, they were testing fresh air!!!
