Title: Auto driving really slowly?
Post by: paulmmc on October 25, 2009, 19:11:04
After months and months of slow but steady work I have finally got my Series 3/RRC hybrid up and running and i took it for a test drive around some fields today. The problem is it feels like it is driving around in low range as it is going quite slowly even at high revs. I have changed between low range, high range and centre diff locks and doesnt seem to affect it, it does seem to be engaing high range but still driving slowly. Anyone got any suggestions?
It is a 1987 3.5 V8 EFI with auto gearbox. The only thing i have found is that while changing all the oils the engine oil was badly contaminated with (i think) water, as it was very cloudy and wasn't very viscous at all when it was drained. This probably happened as it was stored outside for a while and i jet washed it down befoe i put it in the new car. Also the oil level in the auto box is very very low (i didnt have any to top it up today), would this be affecting the drive speed? I will of course top it up next weekend.

Any help appreciated,
cheers, Paul

No oil in the autobox,no drive.Little oil in autobox, little drive. Get the drift. The oil is the life blood of an autobox,if it has been used very low, chances are its been burnt, change it straight away.If you don't know the history of the box also change the oil filter in the autobox sump.

Agree with the above...

I split a pipe from the gearbox cooler and as the oil leaked away it felt like as if it were a manual with the clutch slipping, got it home, just as it ran out of oil, couldnt back it off the drive  ;)

I didnt realise the oil was necessary for it to work, i thought it was for lubrication as per the engine. Thats why i only drove it a very small amount to make sure it didnt overheat or get damamed from lack of lubrication.
I have got the auto box service kit and will do that and top up the oil this weekend.
Thanks
