Title: Disco or Range Rover?

Hi people my name is Justin,

i live in west sussex and used to own a Land Rover Defender 90 200TDI truck cab. I had to give her up because of my job at the time but now i am in a position to get another off roader!

Basically im looking at either a discovery or a range rover and what i would like to know is which is better in the brown stuff, what engines to avoid/which ones are best etc!

Same engines(V8-200/300TDI) same g/box(LT77-R380)same axles,same chassis.Slightly different transfer box RR has a viscous coupling(automatic difflock)Disco has a manual selection difflock and different body styles.Both as good as each other and a good driver can make them both do the same.
This applies to a Range Rover Classic and a Discovery One 92-97.
Your choice.
The engine to avoid in my oppinion is the 2.4/2.5VM,unless you like replacing head gaskets.
Others might say different.

Personally, I prefer the Discovery.

To my mind it is roomier, I feel hemmed in by the lower roof of the Rangy (dunno if its real just the way I feel)

Down to personal choice, both do the same job, I have 300tdi Disco and love it, my brother has a V8 range and loves that.
There is more head room in the Disco but it is only inches though.

Hello Justin,

It's down to personal choice,
I've had a Disco for 12 years and had several RRC's running both at the same time,
The idsoc has a bit more headroom in the back if you want to carry more than 5 passengers.
The tailgate on the Disco gives better access to the back.
The RRC has a drop down tailgate which is good to stand, sit and cook on when off road/camping etc.

They are basically both the same car underneath and will do identical things on and off road.
The only real choice is what car you like.
Which ever one you get, you'll enjoy driving it!

Discovery is just a poor man's Range Rover.  It's also the car that saved LR.  Based HEAVILY on the RRC the disco uses all the same mechanicals with a modified version of the same body, up to the rear doors at least.

You will find that their popularity means Discos are better catered for in terms of spaes and mod parts.  For example a Stainless exhaust for ther 300TDi Disco cost memore than £100 less than the system for the RRC and it's the same damned exhaust, all bar 1 bend :evil:
Body panels are getting harder to find too.

If you go for a 300 series (the soft-dahs RRC) then it's actually designed as a Disco, the softie only being made for about 10 months or so.

Disco, slightly narrower, higher, shorter in the rear body.  RRC, lower, lower CogG due to ali roof, split tailgate back end, slightly more elbow room, slightly plusher seats, neither has loadsof room for rear passengers though the disco gives them better headroom.

The RRC LSE is arguably one of the best cars LR made until the P38 was launched, but they are not so hot off-road.

RRC is the way to go. If headroom is an issue, there are spacers under the seats that will give you an extra inch. All that extra comfort..........................

Viscous for the autos and manual for the manuals on a Rangie. Disco 1 should be the same.

thats not 100% true Pat as you know jim has a manual rrc and thats viscous and i know yours is the same box but a manual difflock.... so both was fitted

In 1989 with the introduction of the "americanised" RRC (concealed hinges, new interior and Lucas hot-wire EFi) the transfer box was upgraded form the LT230 to the Borg-Warner with Visocus centre diff, irrespective of gearbox or engine type.  This gearbox has no mechanical diff-lock and the viscous fluid only locks up when one axle starts to spin out.

The Disco1 in either 200 or 300 guise should have the LT230 with manual diff-lock.

The B-W box is roughly 1.202:1, the LT230 is IIRC 1.22:1, except for the 2.0MPI, 16 valve engine which has the 1.4:1 transfer box like a Defender.

All boxes have the same low ratio, don't ask me what it is though.


The earlier Chrysler torque-flilght 3 speed auto found in 3.5 RRC had a 1:1 LT230 transfer box.

All manual gearboxs should be LT77 up to the introduction of the 300 series/soft-dash when the R380 was introduced, along with 24 spline axles and the later handbrake mechanism, plus the rubber doughnut on the rear prop.  As always there are a few cars either side of the changeover that don't match that spec.
