A bluetooth adaptor costs about £2 from ebuyer and they stick out about 5mm.
Ebay is the best place for gps recievers cheap though.

Weirdly, the Bluetooth type seem to be cheaper than a directly connected one.
You can get a Bluetooth GPS (look for 51 channel ones, they give a better fix even when the signal isn't wonderful) and the USB dongle to allow your laptop to talk to it for £35 or so. Be a bit wary of some of the ultra-cheap dongles as they sometimes have poor range.
Take a look at Amazon - they beat ebuyer by a considerable margin where customer service is concerned.

I bought one last year from an ebay shop, a receiver with about 1 metre of wire that plugs into a usb port. £8.

Speak to Papa Smurf. He has a marine grade one. They're about £60 on eblag.

Ok, now I'm intrigued - whenever I've looked at that approach they've been a lot more than £8! I would quite like to switch to a directly connected one as I won't have to remember to charge the GPS puck before trips then.

Would this be any good to you??:

The cheap ones from the far east don't seem to be around. £20 seems the best price now.

More often than not, you don't even need to mount them outside the cab, or if you do need the extra little bit of reception, you can quite often get a cheap aerial that will allow you to get the signal from outside the vehicle, and yet keep the main unit dry.

good stuf i have a full lenghth roof rack thats borded so im planing to instale it underneth this some place. will that interfer with the signal ??
-
It does need line of sight between the receiver and satellites - that should work sat on the dash in front of the windscreen I would have thought.

Chris is right. The only time I have experienced problems has been with heated windscreens (freelander and mondeo), but the use of an external aerial sorted it out properly. Then again, my system is PDA based, and it's receptive capabilities are a tad, well... rubbish.
Try it on your dashboard first, then if it doesn't work, you could always (and I am not kidding) protect it with an old tupperware or something along those lines.
