a friend has asked me to help with a quiz clue
i have spent hours on it he has spent a lot more time on it
the answer is a petzl product
it is on a mountaineering equipment website
the clue is
24/42, 271° » 30/42. What am I looking at?

Well they are relaying a geographical location by defining a propriety geographic coordinate system based on the number 42.
The 271deg refers to the latitude based on real life coordinate system where Greenwich, England in the prime meridian. So they are suggesting that 271deg is what they are establishing as the prime meridian for 42 based system.
So with the aid of google earth you can setup custom coordinate system, with that done... "24 out of 42" line of latitude and "30 out of 42" longtitude converge exactly over a patch of land in front of a building structure in Crolles, France. Bit of research shows that this is the location of the Petzi head office and original manufacturing workshops where famously there is sited a giant sculpture of a Petzi Quark Ergo Ice Axe which adorns the front lawn. So the answer is "Quark Ergo".

Strangly if you just copy and paste those numbers into google maps then it comes back with the cathedrale saint etenne
http://maps.google.com/maps?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=24%2F42,+271%C2%B0+%C2%BB+30%2F42&sll=37.996163,-95.712891&sspn=50.108357,78.837891&ie=UTF8&hq=24%2F42,+271%C2%B0+%C2%BB+30%2F42&radius=15000.000000&split=1&hnear=&ll=45.828665,1.265488&spn=0.021949,0.038495&t=h&z=15
Googling the numbers though sends you to page 30 of the 42 page petzl catalogue... There's more than one answer to this one, like it or not ;)
