Evening all,
At the prospect of saving £50 I bought a complete gearbox from a breakers who shall remain nameless, instead of going with one that would have been tested etc.... lesson learnt i know, but after freeing off the difflock lever it seems that diff lock is as intermittent and BL themselves and high low selection is a bit of an art. I'm aware that turning these bits by hand is no way replicable of engine speeds but surly it should engage and dissengage as and when i tell it too. After consulting the book of lies (Haynes) the job of taking the transfer box doesn't sound too involved is this true or typical Haynes. I will check that mine is OK on the difflock side of things and if so swap it as its just the gearbox i need (worn layshaft bearings in mine) and hope for the best, and take the transfer box back... altho i am going to have a go at rebuilding my old box and see what happends so i could do the same with that .
As if a gearbox change isn't a PITA anyhow. These things are only sent to test us.
Cheers
John
PS excuse the grammar

Hiya, Transfer box comes off a doddle, just undo the bolts/nuts & slide off - may need a lever to persuade it. To be honest, Ive found this the easiest way to remove/refit a Discovery gearbox especially when working on the deck as it makes it a bit lighter to maul around. Gearbox rebuild on an LT77 is a bit of a struggle without the special tools (i've got a set, hee hee!) but best of luck. Don't forget to check the state of the gearbox output splines while the transfer box is off.

good good.. ill be on the lift at work so hopefully shouldn't be too much trouble. Ment to say its a 300tdi, think shes the R380 with R oposit 5th. Cudos for doing it on the floor.
Are the transfer boxes normally troublsome?

Transfer boxes are generally OK, yours should have a cross drilled input gear so should'nt sufffer from spline wear but it's worth checking. Splits off the same as an LT77. :D
