Title: Are lifting/recovery straps colour coded?
Post by: carbore on November 26, 2009, 15:11:23: Question, I have some "propper" rated and certificated strops that I got a year ago from a marine/agricultural suppliers.

I did not think to ask at the time, but are they colour coded against the rating. I seem to remember they were all different colours. I have some small purple ones and big green one?

Or is it just specific to a manufacturer.

They are only for use around my garden/garrage, not for competition recovery or commercial use.

Post by: big andy w on November 26, 2009, 15:26:02: No colour coding as far as I know, we have differen colours all same rating, what they should have is stitched in rating indicators running the length of the strap, 1 2 3 4 5 lines indicates number of tonne rating for straght pull, the factor is doubled for hoop configuration as round tree stump and both hoops back to shackle or by 1.6 if in choke(passed through either eye and not returned to shackle)

1 purple
2 green
3 yellow
4 grey
5 red

saying that i have a 10 ton one with is yellow also

There is no regulation under LOLER or PUWER which requires colour coding, but the accepted colours as above are correct, however, do not assume that all straps will be the same.

Thanks for the info, so basically If you see someone hanging a Disco 3 of a purple strap run away! If you get given a Red strap, dont assume its 5 ton until you check the stitching/label.

Post by: dxmedia on November 30, 2009, 13:49:50: I know this isn't what you mean, but there should be no need to run away since you should be twice the length of what ever is being used for a recovery distance away at a minimum anyway.

If they are a browninsh, muddy sort of colour then they need a wash

Post by: J.D. on November 30, 2009, 19:28:50: Just as a comment, straps normally have black lines in them, which indicate the safe working load limit. The number of lines indicates the tonnage of the SWL, however simplex strops and ratchet straps have 5 lines in them (but they do not have a safety factor as well).

incase the rope or strop snaps you stand twice the distance due to the recoil of the rope as it will stretch

any bystanders observers should idealy be behind another motor if a shakle pin brakes the shakle will become lose and be catuputled a fair distance

Post by: paul_humphreys on December 06, 2009, 11:04:08: No colour coding on the ones we have at work, also do not go by the stiched lines in them. As they are not always right. We have 12 and 15T ones with only about 6 stiched lines in them. They all should have a tag stiched on them stateing the SWL. Also We have 2T and 15T ones the same colour!!
