I'd personally flu to the top, if not for any other reason, you'll not be able to sweep the chimney in the same way, and rather than getting a build up of tar and a fire in a few years.  Do it properly once and save a lot of grief in years to come.

Have a word with V8Moneypit, his wife use to sell them.

I do know that your better off heating wise to have exposed flue, as you then gain the heat from the chimney as well.

You don't need a flue if you've got a clay lined chimney.

If not fit a flexible flu from the top.

If in doubt seek advice from an expert and keep things within building regulations.

If you run a short vitreous enamel flue into the chimney, you have to fit a registry plate to 'seal' off around the base of the chimney. It will need to be removable so you can sweep the chimney.

The chimney will need a smoke test, I believe.

Also, any stove installation now needs to be signed off by a qualified fitter to meet building regulations.

I can't say I'm an expert, but when the other half has been selling these for many years, some of it ends up rattling around in my otherwise empty brain

Sarah has put some useful stuff on her web site. There is a link to the relevant building regs at the bottom.
