Title: Damage to me motor
Post by: davidlandy on December 22, 2003, 20:54:33
I thought that it might be agood idea to post pics or give stories of damage caused to our beloved motors.

I am gonna start the topic off by posting the pics of the time I snapped shocker and my rear coil spring came out.

here I am climbing the hill, with a fair amount of axle twisting at pace...

The only bit of damage I have caused whilst off-roading was when I had the Disco, I creased the rear wing, whilst driving a muddy hole and cross axled the motor, causing the wheel/tyre to catch the wing. All the other damage was due to a driving instructor hitting me at 40mph while I was stationary on a roundabout, causing a lot of damage. That’s another story.

No physical damage inflicted thus far into my laning career, but damage to what's left of my pride has been pretty damn frequent!! :)

Take for example the situation below...
...where a moments lapse in concentration (caused by the need to politely ask noisey children in the back to please be quiet) led to neglecting to engage diff lock and getting well and truely stuck in a nice deep Land Rover eating rut!

However, had a nasty shock when I managed to reverse the wife's Vitara into the front bumper of my 90 when returning from Xmas shopping the other day - Ouch!!! ... broken light and dent in the rear quarter panel - but no mark whatsoever on the 90... which was some comfort 8)

Heres a piccy of a scratch to a very very new disco after a little laning jaunt thru Northants.

the owner at the moment shall remain anonymous, but he/she is a member of the mud-club, and may own up after this.

After much T cutting I believe the scratch to be a little less 'angry looking' now.

Dave,

Hard to believe, eh?

The truth is that on that particular day every single other member of the group got stuck - 'cept me. Soo, to retain my human (as opposed to God like) appeal I thought I'd deliberately get stuck too... funny how not too many people believe that modest explanation of my bad luck!  8)

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Xmas to all Mud Clubbers,

............and now I cannot resist the posting of this one

The famous antics at Aston Cantlow of 'Top man' brother Colin, with Mick pulling him out of a hole whilst Colin is reversing against his superhuman strength!!!!!!  He managed after diving into a big hole to displace all those components south of his Discos bumper!

this will be one of the most famous pics of all time - probably

hope u dont mind me posting this Colin?

how about this. i blew the rear diff, the gearbox, ripped the rear axle of, crushed the inner wings, bent the roll bar, twisted the chasis, bent the flange on the diff, broke both trailing arms, the ball joint and destroyed a rim+tyre and nearly all the body work!!!

I made my own extreme suspension kit which put to much strain on the radius arms. basickly i was in a deep hole and hit a verticle slope backwards which snapped the trailing arms etc. then after this everything broke!!!

Dave,

I remember you doing that. Very entertaining as i remember    . Pretty much what that Disco did on Sunday although he bent a trailing arm as well. Was waiting to happen. The shock had rusted though  .

Unfortunately no pictures of me with damage :( . Being such a skillful off roader I've never damaged anything    .

Back on the road again now  :D , managed to make one good alternator out of the two duff ones , but now i'm definitely going to carry a spare alternator .
Title: Damage to me motor
Post by: Guy90 on January 20, 2004, 20:17:17
I have alternator problems everytime I'm at Tixover. Basically muck gets in and jams the brushes therefore stopping the alternator from working properly. I find that putting the jet wash on it followed by lots of wd40 and a quick whack with a hammer sorts it.

If anyone is having persistant problems then extract the bit with brushes in and clean out. Tixover mud is like grinding paste ans will destroy the brushes in no time. I go though 3 sets a year.

Went to get my puncture fixed this afternoon and the guys spend 20mins trying to find it.

turned out that it was mud on the bead of the tyre preventing it from sealing properly - wonder how that got there!

Dave,

I think you came to the rescue of more than one of us  :D

Anyway, TD5 is back up and running, though it feels a little lumpy and the cruise control doesn't work any more (but the light does come on the switch).  Will have to get the 'new' ECU seen to some time.

Have started to take the old one apart, but can't see any obvous signs of water or dirt in there.  Will give it a wash anyway and see how it goes.

See you all soon, if I'm allowed out in SWMBO's motor again

If I remember when I entered the quarry you were flying round like a ferret up a trouser leg, unfortunately it wasn't the mud that did for you it was the car wash

But glad to hear we'll see you again

A friend of mine has the 4 cylinder version of yours and it made him shudder when I told him of your fun, but I think he wants to come to the next one I can get to, but not to let his wagon in the mire

I reassured him I would show him around in his, but if you are there I'm sure you could oblige him

HI Kev,
Mine is a 24 spline. Well the left over halfshafts are. Will see what else comes up thanks.

David,
I didn't mean to do it honest. :)

How much was the diff from Ashcrofts? I bet it's painful.

I wonder where the pins might have ended up but for the diff guard.
I thought diff guards were to stop us puncturing the diff cover.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the offer mate.
This'll make you all smile.

The recovery guy said it was his last job of the day. He filled in my details on his paperwork and computer. Asked for my home address and then asked where it was being recovered to.

John o' Groats said I.
His jaw fel through the floor before he realised.

Also he said if I had to be winched on then I'd have to pay extra.
I pointed to my winch and he laughed and said he'd love to tell his boss that someone had to be winched on but he hadn't charged them. Then tell him I had my own winch.

They charge £30 to winch a vehicle on board.

David,

Thanks for that info. It would be a last resort at the moment. These things have a habit of happening at the wrong time.

In all my years off-roading, I can't ever remember seeing someone break a carrier !!

Plenty of planet pins, a few broken teeth and a good number of damaged diff pans.....   but the carrier !!!!

If you can't get a diff, Ashcroft stuff tends to be well put together.  I got my torque converter from them, service was excellent.

My commiserations

A "Managed to smash the diff carrier Mud Award" would more than make up for the pain and suffering whilst valiantly trying to uphold the clubs prestigious name.

G'wan Tim you know ya really really wanna'.
