I have a whining sound coming I think from the gearbox (sounds a bit like the sound a large electric motor makes). I’m about to change the diff oil, transfer box oil and the gearbox oil to try and cure it. The noise only comes when I accelerate and happens in all gears. When I press the clutch the noise stops. Have you any ideas please.
I know I'm about to regret the electric motor analogy.

My Disco has developed the same noise, the electric motor analogy is good! Mine is mostly on deceleration though.
I have not idea what it is either! ](*,)
-
is there any oil present?
-
Not sure what you mean?
-
If you press the clutch and the noise goes, thrust bearing or input shaft bearing springs to mind.

ITS A LANDROVER,IF IT WORKS LEAVE IT,IF IT BREAKS FIX IT!!!!

I've changed the oil in the diffs and topped up the oil in the main and transfer boxes, I've still got the noise and its happening most of the time whilst accelerating and cruising. It's not a grinding noise but more of a loud hum, it gets slightly louder as the engine speed increases upon acceleration. The noise stops if I press the clutch and also stop[s if I press the clutch slightly in while accelerating. Have you any ideas please. I've only just moved over to owning a diesel Defender after owning V8 Range Rovers & Discovery's for years.

CLUTCH-PRESS-NOISE- GOES=Nut behind the wheel not listening
Engine turning faster=noise getting louder, thrust bearing turning faster. Are we getting warm yet, press clutch and noise goes, jackpot

Sorry I know I may sound stupid  but bare with me and I'll get there in the end :D I've spent the past 15 years owning 4 x 4's with auto boxes so I'm not very knowledgeable about manual boxes. If either the thrust bearing or the input bearing has gone what do I have to do next i.e. renew clutch, renew gearbox etc. How long approx do these things last after they start making a noise, will it just fail all of sudden or will the noise just get worse. Any advice would be most welcome. [-o<

The input bearing usually just gets louder with a bit of vibration before it fails. The thrust bearing gets very noisier then starts to squeal all the time(thats what happened to mine) it wont just let go, it will tell you as it gets worse. Gearbox out I'm afraid to cure.
-
defo gearbox out change thrust bearing have a look at clutch if worn change as its out mite as well do it have a look at input bearing as well while your there, in my opinion probably thrust bearing
-
Thanks for the advice on the above, I'm going to try to last out until the weather warms up and then replace the complete clutch.

not disbuting your response, as i too think its the front input bearing, either that or output bearings on the t/box ( but they whine and hum mainly on overrun )
but you say the thrust bearing cannot fail, sorry to correct you but they can and do just fail.
as soon as you start to hear a whine off the bearing its not long before it siezes up and produces a squeel. the rapid heat build up soon starts to melt the plastic carrier which in turn pushes the bearing back and causes instant failure.
every single one that i have replaced ( and thats quite a few ) has done the same

Extreme 90.
Can you highlight in my posting where it says the thrust bearing cannot fail, as i believe all bearings will fail in time.

highlighted in bold for you,
then again i did put it in my origional post as a ref point
