My Disco started running badly christmas eve. It was running sound up till then. Starts first time every time, pulls away ok but when engine is under load if feels like its only firing on 3 cylinders, and you can feel the engine vibrating the car. :-k  I have changed the fuel filter and checked the lift pump but its still the same?? When idle and reving up, the engine is fine, no misfire at all. Everything else is working fine. Any ideas?? :-k

does is black smoke like hell going up the road
turbo hoses are prone to de-laminating and sucking inside out. causing a lack of air into the engine, with a huge under power and missfire with no go at all
to to show how bad it can be, ive got a video ill put on youtube of my td5 comp truck coffing and backfiring due to the same problem, and thats only done 26k from new !

Could be air being sucked into the fuel line somewhere - check the spill rail between the injectors, these have a tendency to wear thin on the engine soundproofing, look for them becoming soaked in diesel when you rev the engine hard.
Also check the fuel lines between injection pump, lift pump, fuel filter, sedimenter and tank.
The pipes out of the top of the tank have a tendency to rust as well - good coating of grease before you refit the inspection cover in the boot floor is a good preventative.

Thanks for the replys guys. It does black smoke a bit on start up but goes after a couple of miniutes. Am going to wait til monday then have a good look at things hopefully I'll resolve it. Thinking of it, I have been losing power slowly now for a couple of weeks. I'll check those hoses and fuel pipes first, You watch it rain monday

try unplugging your EGR valve, i think they were the worst idea ever, if this works buy a blanking kit..... more power and more mpg..

Thanks mate but the EGR was fully removed a long while ago :)

I had a similar problem: turned out to be the water-trap (in-board of the chassis, drivers side, down past the rear wheel) going porous and letting air in.
I just bypassed it all together
