Title: X-Box 360 or PS3?
Post by: auf_wiedersehen_pet on December 29, 2009, 17:32:48
I'm looking at buying one or the other so that I can play Formula 1 2010 (Due next year on X-Box & PS3) and either Forza Motorsport 3 (X-Box) or GT5 (PS3).

I know very little about either. Your thoughts please?

I use mine as a media player as it will play and store MP3's - AVI's etc

Ps3 is a media centre more than a gaming machine.  I have mine plugged into the TV and a 5.1 surround system, all TV comes in over the internet (tvcatchup.com) or via iplayer (built into the ps3), films are through the built in bluray player or DVD's using the PS3's second-to-non upscaler. Using the internet is a little clunky due to using the 6 axis rather than a keyboard and mouse, although it's more than dooable.

The internet is free and unlimited access unlike the xbox360, the hard drive is user upgradable (laptop sata drive), unlike the extortionally expensive 360 hard drives. The new ps3's don't look quite as much like the george forman grill, although they've lost the backwards compatibility of the ps2 games (I've got it, and have never used it).

WiFi on the PS3 is rubbish - google it, it's very very slow. I'm using 200Mb ethernet adaptors to solve the problem. The later PS3's might have got a better wifi card, but the early ones it's like being on 'b'.

xbox 360 - It's easier to code for, so the games blow the PS3 games out of the water. Don't get the PS3 for gaming, get the xbox. Give it 2 - 3 years though, the coders will get their heads around the 7 cores in the ps3 and the games will get exceptional.

Oh the TV tuner card thing for the ps3 is supposed to be brilliant. I've not got cable / Sky or Freeview here so I've never tried it.

If I was to get a console now - I'd get the xbox, and replace it with a ps3 in 2 - 3 years time.

If I was to get a media centre now, I'd get a PS3 and start playing games on it in 2 - 3 years.

Oh iplayer will never come out for the xbox due to m$ charging to get online, and this being in breach of aunti's t&c's.  You might be able to navigate to the iplayer webpages though - don't know, never tried.

Definatly PS3 bought mine a few months ago and use it for everything. Blu-Rays are amazing if you have a compatible TV and also really good at upscaling standard DVD's too.

Gaming is great and the online store lets you download lots of demo's for free to see if you like the games before shelling out for them. and as mentioned already free to go online and updates automatically, free to browse the web and i-player built into it too..

You really cant go wrong and unless your addicited to microsoft then i really cant see the point in the x-box. even though it is cheaper but then the PS3 has loads more to offer

Hope that helps :)

xbox360 and web browsing...  :-k just had a look and it seems not an not out of box feature :( looks like it can be setup but it's ugly and needs a media centre pc on the network. I no longer have any easily available windows PC's, only linux so if you know another way prey tell. also can plug a USB keyboard into the xbox and use that for text (not gaming).

PS3; bought an xbox and sold it shortly after.

Everything Sony do just seems to be slicker - especially the GUI.

Want to sell it?

I have the original UK market PS3, the 60 gig is it? and I have to say the games or pretty good, not that I play a lot, I bought it for the blu ray and the upscaler and I havr to say I bought a brand new panasonic blue ray recorder that can't perform like the old PS3 can.

If it's games, hgames, games then the Xbox has more titles, if it's anything else, hmmm, PS3 I think.

Don't have nor wish for either.

If you have either of these, you get screwed for TV Tax, and I can't afford to pay for executives lifestyle, when I'm struggling to keep my own payments in check.

tv tax = tv license? That's not true, you do not need one - shame all this time you could have been playing instead of believing and perpetrating the executives propaganda

What if I only use a TV to watch videos/DVDs/as a monitor for my games console? Do I still need a licence?

You do not need a TV Licence if you only use your TV to watch videos and DVDs or as a monitor for your games console.
You can tell us that you do not need a TV Licence by using our online declaration form. One of our Enforcement Officers may visit you to confirm that you do not need a licence.

Since you can pick up internet TV from outside of the UK, you don't need a licence to view TV using a computator. You also don't need a licence for a monitor (Film / Games / PC)

the new slimline PS3's are backwards compatible with the older playstation games. tried and tested on my new one.

i prefer the PS3 to the X-box. but if you only want it for F1 and either GT5 or forza, take the X-box. gran turismo isn't the best anymore.

Many thanks for all of the answers.

I've opted for the 250gb PS3. Picked it up from Argos yesterday along with GT5 Prologue and Motorstorm Pacific Rift.

I love it. Absolutely brilliant. The graphics are definately better than my mates Pong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pong) which we played in the seventies.

I'll be buying the full version of GT5 when it is released in March, along with Formula 1 2010.
