Hi all.
I have a petrol jeep Cherokee and im trying to decide whether to swap it for a diesel 4x4 of some sort. I quite like my jeep but its a bit [!Expletive Deleted!] on fuel. Are things like shoguns and bighorns much better and will they do 20mpg or more ?
I get about 10-15 mpg and do mostly town driving.

i can reccoment the audi allroad.

LPG it ;)

My LPG Disco V8 gives the best of both worlds: good MPG and the vrooooooooooooooom of a V8
-
our diesel 90 is great on fuel, my old disco was not so good, i personally love V8 so lpg is a good way to go best of all worlds :P
-
i was thinking about lpg. Where is best to get the kits from?

Have a look at tinsleytech (think that's how it's spelt), or ebay for a cheap one. Single point is fine for the 4.0

Is there a place that sells LPG close to home? My V8, the late Tarquin, used to do about 12 mpg on LPG, 16 on petrol, and when I took him to work I had to fill up every week. Luckily there is an LPG garage at the bottom of the village - he used to do 168 miles to a tank of LPG or 148 if I was towing, meaning that long journeys had to be planned very carefully. If you have to do a 30 mile round trip just to fill up with gas, is it really worth it? When we took Tarquin to Somerset a couple of years ago we had to fill him up EVERY DAY! Luckily we found a place round the corner that sold gas. When we took the diesel to Wales the following year, we had to fill up twice - once when we arrived and again the day before we came home, having spent ten days exploring Mid Wales. She averages just over 20 mpg towing, nearly 30 solo.
Tarquin was fitted with a multi-point LPG system (Range Rover Blues sorted it all out for me - I don't have any more detail than that, sorry) and seemed if anything to be even more powerful on gas than petrol. He used to climb a 1 in 4 in low box just ticking over - I didn't have to touch the loud pedal once he was moving. Penelope, the 300TDi, doesn't go marching off anything like the same way - even in low box on the relatively flat, I have to tickle the throttle to keep her moving. I don't go laning any more, I have her for towing the caravan and she is more than capable.
Swings and roundabouts. V8 = the sound it makes, the power, the FUN! Diesel = being able to fill up in every garage, but not every five minutes.
Head says diesel, heart says V8.

diesel!.......... what was the question?

I used to get 22-26 mpg from my 2.8 LWB Diesel Pajero - then again I get the same from the V6 Petrol Land Cruiser, so long as I don't floor it too often....
Of course when I do floor it a lot more happens than with the old Paj!

cherokees run fantastic on gas,ive got one....go on www.rockznrutz.com and pm KD,he had some secondhand gas kits for cherokees for sale
-
im quite tempted by a discovery at the moment i think the jeep is a bit to small to use for work.
-
Buy a Jeep Grand Cherokee and run it on petrol...19-26 mpg
-
I have a bit of a heavy right foot so i doubt ill get many mpg from a petrol.
i think i have decided to go for a diesel pajero or a discovery but im not sure what one .
Whats better?? I will be using it for building work and a bit of towing so i need something with good boot space thats not to bad on fuel.
What mpg does a diesel disco and pajero do?
-
diesel paj? about 20 to 22 mpg...my mate had one
diesel disco? about 25 ....all round town, less when towing

Why? The 4.0 i6 in the jeep is already a storming engine. Stick it on LPG and see over 30 to the gallon.

I keep hearing that fuel will get to £1.80/L by the end of the Summer. If so, it will be expensive to run anything that does less than 50mpg

Somehow I doubt it, with a general election coming it would be political suicide....
-
I guess it depends on how much you will use it... I would consider buying a petrol even a petrol Jeep Wrangler 4.0 as it will only be used for play and occassional days out.
Like its already been said convert it to LPG then you have the best of both worlds, cheap fuel and all the power.
