With diesel finally reachin 92p :shock: its time i cut back on my consumption(must stop drinkin it) :)
Anyway so i thought motorbike to get to work n back save me loads a money :idea: :(kerching):
i dont however have a clue about training, and buying a motorbike
i was told a days trianing would cost £100 and cover me for two years on a 125, is this true :-k
Can anybody help. not looking for the east rider look :(shades): , just wanna save sum dosh, and not pay the crappy government all my spare cash :roll:

Quick reply as I am off to work in a few mins.
For a provisional M/C liscense you must pass a CBT (compulsary basic training).
This will normaly take 1 day but as with all tests, could take longer. It is down to the assesment of the trainers.
If after 2 years you have not progressed to the stage 1 of a full liscense (passed your first proper test that allows you to ride a bike with power of no greater then 34bhp I think) you lose your provisional entitlement.
It used to be that you lost it for 2 years but I think this may have changed.

not sure how old you are, but if you passed you car test a vey long time ago thier is a posabilty that you don't need to CBT, but you are restricted to 50cc with L-plate. but it's something like passing it 20 years's ago :lol:

There used to be 1 week intensive courses that would teach you how to ride and get you through the necessary tests - don't know if they (independent companies, not the government!) still run them though.
What's the traffic like where you travel? Bikes are great and I've spent many years riding, but no matter how good you are, you are at the mercy of more and more prat car drivers who couldn't see bright yellow artic with huge flashing lights on it ... let alone a small skinny motorbike :roll: Don't mean to put you off, just make sure you've really thought about it :wink:
There's nothing better than always getting to the front of the queue at traffic lights, junctions, etc. Except maybe a good blast down a twisty country road on a dry, warm, sunny day :D Oh no, don't get me started :shock: I can't afford another bike........

As I understand it a car entitlement should allow you to ride a 50cc as a learner but I could be wrong.
If you take and pass CBT you can ride up to a 150 for 2 years before you need to tretake the test ( I have a mate about to retake his) After the first one it's just an inconvenience really.
If you pass the full test in the meantime then all well and good, but you are restricted to about a 350 for 2 years I think, you may still be able to take a 'super course' where you take the test on a 600 and can then go straight onto a big bike, but that loop hole may have been closed now.
Just remember bikes are b***y dangerous, how economical does a car have to be before you'd consider it?

Proper training, 200% concentration and a distrust of all other vehicles/pedestrians/etc are a major help to your safety!

a small note to bike riders though, i dont need to see the whites of your eyes as you come towards me on my side of the road just before you duck back in to the traffic :shock:
you also dont need to try and rub your leathers down my van as you overtake me and try to stay on the right side of the white line cos you misjudged how far away the truck coming the other way was

I was overtaken by a chap today - I was doing 30 in a 30 mph zone, which was obviously far too slow and highly inconsiderate to this BMW convertible driver ... so he overtook me.
OK, so he overtook me and exceeded the speed limit in doing so ... but he also very nearly smashed into the speed calming measure (other side of road closed off type) as he squeezed by me :x Oh, I'm sorry ... was I supposed to slow down to let him pass?

Unfortunately there are t**ts on the road who can't seem to see 2 tonnes of Ranger Rover, covered in spotlights, howling like god-knows-what coming towards them, what chance does some poor b****d on a bike stand? I'd love a bike but until they make incompetance a capital offence I'll be staying on 4-wheels (the bigger the better).

i took my cbt and test with highway ,situated at evenload road solihull, his name is ray, he's a good instructer but that was 12 years ago things change but could still be there ..there is bsm on coventry road a couple of doors from j&s and also westfield motorcycle training they should be in the book

i have to take a CBT test no matter wat. then i can ride a 125 for two years before i either take a test, or retake the CBT.
Just saving for a bike now, only after a cheap 125, dont fancy one them scooter things, any recommendations.

i took my test on a honda cg 125 an ugly bike but will go for ever on a gallon of fuel 4stroke as well so low maintanance ......

£115 blimey it was only £55 when i did mine and that included 5 hour long lessons all in the same day.. sigh how the times change ..lol :lol: good luck anyway ...sheldon motorcycles have some nice bikes but try the bargain pages some good bargains in that

I personally would get a decent trail bike so you could still do the green lanes ...and also if you haven't been on a bike before it's good to play in the park on to get a bit of practice :lol: thats wot the kids who nick em do anyway :lol:

Just renewed my insurance on 500cc Honda £49 TPFT this a cross between a road bike and a crosser all it needs to go off road is decent set of tyers

Go for a 100cc rather than a 125. Insurance is much cheaper (dunno why) and you only loose 2.5bhp.
My learner bike was a Kawasaki KC 100 imported from belgium. They dont restrict the power quite as much as the UK goverment and I had 25% more power than a UK 125.
Trailies are expensive for what you get as they are so much more fun than road bikes but you do need longer legs for them.
If you are on the shorter side then I would suggest the baby brother of my bike an EL125. Might be able to find one cheap that needs cosmetic work.

to be honest, to fail you CBT you shouldn't be let on the road period :) it's just a general awareness and competence test, ride around a few cones in car-park, controlled stop and then a little ride around the block. I know I done mine 13 odd years ago, but back then the instructors just called it the idiot test. (only a complete idiot could fail)
worth going for main test soon as you can, unless you live in middle of town and only drive around town you need too move on to be safer, being able to keep up with traffic makes things a lot safer. that's the biggest problem with a 125 is that you get lorry's over taking you and that an't fun. and with such a good range of 500's commuter bike (like Kawasaki er5) it's worth putting the time in :) just all the awareness test and theory you need to do these days :evil:
oh and don't buy an aprilia as they blow up all the time and people love to steal them as parts sell well *note the breaking down*

:D If youve never ridden a motorbike before ide recomend a twist and go scooter, i know there not the best bikes in the world but theres loads about, and the 125s are qiute quick really around town. See how you go first on the C.B.T. :wink:
Owening and rideing a bike can be great fun, but as previously mentioned these days the roads are more congested than ever and no one has any consideration for other users. Presant company not included as i think 4x4 drivers are more conciderate than most, when it comes to other fellow road users. I used to ride a motorbike years ago and i had more near misses with car drivers and bus drivers than anything else, where as 4x4 drivers saw me comeing earlier esspecially when it came to overtakeing monuevers. Im not trying to put you off, but think about it seriously before you go ahead.
