Title: Which diesel engine?
Post by: JumboBeef on January 19, 2010, 13:02:10
I have owned a 200Tdi, and also a (new at the time) TD5.  I'm now looking for a 110 Diesel, and I am wondering if I should go for a 300Tdi (I'm looking to spend £4,000 to £8,000) or save money and go for a 200Tdi, or push the boat out and go for a TD5.

Which is engine is best, taking into account the cost (I know a TD5 is better than a 200Tdi, but it costs a damn sight more).

Thanks.

Personally, I'd go for a 200/300 based on it being mechanical and ease of getting hold of spares/replacement parts. As to whether 200/300 it's more down to condition of the rest of the car - bulkhead, outriggers, rear crossmember etc.

How about a V8 defender 110- then drop in a mazda engine (Tdi for me )

However I'd look for a good condition 200, the late 300 and the early td5's seem to be very similar in price.

td5 any day,
ubber reliable
stupidly easy to pull apart and fix ( if ) owt goes wrong
can be tweaked to suit your driving style or mapped to death for towing or just loosing chavs in your slip stream.
converted both my 90's now, my comp truck and road truck and all i can say is id never go back

Having had all three engines in various LR's I'd say it depends on what you want from the engine.
The 200 is awsome, never goes wrong if you look after it (regular oil & filter changes and do the belts as per LR schedule),
it is VERY economical and the bits are easy for sevicing and replacement.

The 300 is almost as good as the 200, less noisey but also less economical. basically the same as the 200 with parts and service etc.

The Td5 is probably the best all round engine though.
Unbustable, nothing ever goes wrong with them. No belt changes to worry about.
They can pull anything and you can have them chipped to exactly how you want them.

Push the boat out, you'll be happier and it will be worth it in the long run.

I had a 200 Disco for 12 years, it got over 30mpg in all that time.
The 300 RRC gave about 28 MPG over three years,
The Defender Td5 is returning about 28 MPG.

Which belts and how often do they need replacing on the 200/300?

Cam belts mate, they need changing every 6 years max or so many miles that i cant remember,i change them bout every 4 years as i dont do that many miles. Only costs about £40ish quid for the bits.

why are there so many td5s for sale with head gasgets gone, ecus full of oil, cracked head and the list gose on and most times i see a lr on a aa wagon its a td5? im only tempted because there newer and are a bit more powerfull than the tdi although i think flat in the bottom end oh thay also drink almost as bad as a v8 at times.

my m8s x reg 90 when 2 years old had 2 air flow meters in a month loads of other stuff not engine related so was swaped for a disco td5 that had 2 fuel pumps airflow meter needed low box all the time in feilds as couldnt set off at low rpm on a small bank(my tdi disco did no proplem wih a trailer in tow.

driven quite a few and there ok and seem cheap when u look at late tdi prices but i didnt have to pay to fix them

how can anyone complain about head gaskets going on a td5 when tdi's are equally as bad blowing on no 8 push rod ???
heads cracking, just the same as 300tdi's then.
yes they can be flat bottom end, but a map soon cures that
air flow meters, were they cheap ones ? as non genuine ones are just that, cheep and crap which also cause inacurate figures causing the engine to be flat as a kippers
fuel pumps only pack up because they need fuel around them to keep the motor cool, however people running the level down to the amber  mark all the time aint going to do the pump any favours .
i love my td5's and this is coming from someone who used to sware by the 200tdi.
