Title: swivel pin housing rear seal... easy to change?
Post by: john656 on January 23, 2010, 20:29:57: I'm going to be doing the discs and pads all round on my disco next weekend weather permitting. I noticed that the NS swivel oil seal is leaking :shock: supprise supprise and wondered if it was an easy fix seeing as I'm half way there with the disc and calliper off? If I'm just renewing the seal will i get away without having to check the pre load as I'm not touching the bearings etc? Ive looked in the book of lies and it shows in the picture that the seal is removed before everything else.

Post by: tack43 on January 23, 2010, 20:38:48: It could be done but it's arkward and why do half a job? Makes sense to check and regrease wheel bearings, preload etc while it's all off.

Undo the steering linkage then the (i think) 7 bolts that hold the hub to the axle.

Remove it as a complete unit including the axle shaft, then place upside down (hub 1st) into a builders bucket.

Then undo the seal retainer, prise the seal out and replace and then the seal retainer back in. Replace into axle and retighten bolts and refil hub. Job done! #

No need to touch anything else and no need to worry about preload. It is worth just regreasing the bearings once you have done this though, just to be thorough.

Post by: john656 on January 23, 2010, 20:59:00: Nah this is next weekends job... ill be doing discs and pads all round so i figured while i have it off weather it would be easy enough to change the rear seal too. I will be re greasing all the wheel bearings as i go.

Post by: Range Rover Blues on January 23, 2010, 23:20:31: Agreed. The swivel preload should be set witht the oil seal removed anyway. You can either pull the halfshaft out of the swivel then remove the ball, or if you are a strong bloke pull the swivel, stub and halfshaft/CV out in one peice.

However, seal failure often indicates the swivel is pitted and has damaged the seal, so you may be wasting time and money.

Post by: john656 on January 23, 2010, 23:24:29: RRB, would this pitting be noticable from under the car? If so the swivel has no visable pitting and feels nice and smooth to touch with no signs of any dimples etc?

Post by: Range Rover Blues on January 23, 2010, 23:30:33: I usually find the piting easy to trace because you can see a smear of oil/grease form where the oil seal has been damaged. If the chrome surface is all good and shiney then you have done well, they don't often last long enough for the oil seal to wear out.

I put PTFE swivels on Blue last time and they havn't lasted very well at all, within 2 years they were pitted and the finish has worn off.

Post by: bogie on January 24, 2010, 11:04:08: Personely i would drain the oil out,fill it with grease and put a spot of ep90 in,its cheaper than one shot and it does the job very well and hopefully it wont leak!

Post by: Range Rover Blues on January 24, 2010, 14:35:03: Having found that one shot turns into oil soon anyway I use Lucas hub oil now, it's better than one-shot and works out cheaper.
