Do you mean "Converted Lawnmower" buggy or "McRae Dakar" buggy/Sand Rail?

There is the "Build an off road buggy for" £XXX (not a lot) that Haynes Publish.?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Build-Your-Own-Off-road-Buggy/dp/1859606423/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1264629440&sr=8-1

Iv looked at some on ebay before as iv got some land, prices vary but over £1000 you can get something very scary. No idea of build quality though.

My mate has one, it was powered by a 900cc Fireblade engine. It was so fast across a stubble field even time slowed down!

Great fun cost us a fortune in Chains and sprockets but what a laugh!

South Wales Police went through a phase last summer of scrapping them, when their owners were caught using them illegally.

Can do under section 59 if its not reclaimed after 14 days or if it caught on the public highway with not insurance etc...

Lucky for us my mate also owns 2000 acres of Lincolnshires fines grade 1 silt land! :D

If you plan to build a road legal one, start by reading up on the SVA/IVA regs. Yes there are hoops to jump through but a well-designed and built vehicle should have no trouble passing, and it's well worth the effort as you'll only be able to use it on private land with the landowner's permission otherwise.

Personally if I was in the market to build something extreme it'd probably be a traybacked 90 as a road legal challenge truck.

Nah, Scammell Constructor!  :D

The front axle articulation is mad, and with a walking beam at the back and 6x6...

It does have a rear-mounted winch too - reckon it'd be allowed to enter challenge events?

Only ask as I am designing a full spaceframe buggy based on a Disco engine and running gear with coilovers, although 303 axles are looking tempting!

Hope to start the build in April/ May - not sure when it will be finished, the aim is 6 to 8 months.

Presumably the seller organises the IVA? I'd want to see a certificate before shelling out personally, as I've heard a few tales of people buying something described as "road legal" and then finding to their cost that it lacks the necessary IVA paperwork!
