Swapped out the mashed up driver side wing on my 300tdi defender this week. Few of the plastic rivet peg things that hold the wheel arch to the wing where missing/broken../ anyone know the LR part number or suitable source for replacement for them? cheers
ooo and what is that large resistor in the loom hidden under the wing for?

The big resistor is for your headlights, when you put on your sidelights it puts your headlights on at a low power. Its not fitted to early vehicles or later ones, just middle years 200/300tdi iirc

Even though this function is not needed and lamps work normally I have been determined to fault find as to why it's not working anyway. So I went through the circuit (there is a dim/dip relay too behind instrument cluster) and with much dicking around its turns out the resistor that is at fault. It's not the expected ~1ohm but not open circuit either. It's measuring in the tens of Meg ohms so was getting a voltage reading but no way current was going to pass (at least not enough to light bulb).
I disconnect the resistor from the loom and used a dremel to mill out the plugged ends of resistor in hope of finding a bad connection but no it's an internal fault and beyond the resin plugs its ceramic potted so no repair.
I have ordered a 1ohm 50watt resistor in similar alloy package (£3.99 ) but with solder-able end lugs instead of potted wires, when that arrives this dim dip feature it should be working. I will then probably dislike it and disconnect the resistor from loom :lol:
On side note the rave circuit diagram for that resistor say 1e3ohm which to me is the math notation for 1000ohm (1kohm) but that doesn't make sense.

:D odd thing is that it has v high resistance in one direction and a much lesser (yet still high) resistance in opposite direction - like some sort of a bizarre diode.
Hard to believe how a cermanic sealed unit encased in a alloy heat shield, riveted to a plate, bolted to a shielded spot on the inner wing can have an internal mechanical fault (unless it left factory like it!). I dunno how it could have been blown... halogens are fitted where as originally it would have had sealed beams though :-k
New one will have its smoke still inside and ready to go, should be delivered tomorrow :dance:

The rivets? Once BigA had nodded at the part number (cheers) I ended up getting 20 from www.lrseries.com. Bit more pricey but because I was ordering some other parts it was less hassle just to tag them on.

upGot the DIM-DIP working :dance: The resistor get v.hot so not sure how long it will last, warms UP inner wing panel well enough! I bet landrover where set to make a fortune in replacements if the dim-dip legislation had stuck. Anyway stupid feature now working. I read that the way halogen lamps function they have a reduced life span when operating at lower voltage than what they where designed for :doh:

Didn't take photo but without ignition on the sidelamps will come on by themselves - parking lights.
