have just fitted a re-con Lt77 in my 300 defender have put dextron 2 in it and on idle it chatters but when i press the clutch the noise goes but as soon as i release it the noise comes back is this normal until i run the box in??
-
Sounds more like the release bearing, did you fit a new one when you changed the box?
-
yeah i fitted a new one! it sounds like its coming from the box
-
Mine does exactly the same! I bought an ex-military recon box a while ago. I replaced the clutch, including the release bearing. Like you, I get a noise when at idle in neutral which goes away when the clutch is pressed. I've given up worrying about it for now!
-
yes but its just so anoying as the old one didnt do it so why should this one arrrr
-
sounds to me that the box hasnt been shimmed up properly, these shimms are to stop the shafts in the box from going backwards and forwards, this can be caused by the box not being tight enough,i.e not a thick enough shim,or to thick, and to tight, then loosening off after a few miles,if the noise is coming from the box as you say,but it does sound like either thrust bearing,or maybe the shaft that the bearing sits on,could be worn bad, causing the bearing to tilt slightly.

if the box was tight it wouldnt cause this, it has to be shimmed less to create excess backlas to cause " chatter " in the box at the engine runs
i put money on being the release bearing

so you think even tho i fitted a brand new thrust bearing it could be that?

just out of curiosity, you were looking at buying a britpart clutch kit the other day, what brand of release bearing did you get? :-k
-
i got a valeo kit. was told that what was fitted as standard! is it?

yeah true i spose,i was just goin on i had that happen on a customers motor before,it had been to tight, then after a few miles it had loosen because of excess wear on the main shaft,so they said,im not a gearbox expert, nor want, lol.

my military 110 chatters on idle,i thought it was a shagged centre bearing on mine but found it was ok.

Its the little springs in the clutch. If the noise goes away when you gently increase the engine revs just turn the tickover up as it might be to low. Quite a common problem with clutches.

Release bearing, mine done it for years,it was fine with the v8 in ,but soon as the tdi went in it clattered so i left it!!! Been like it years!!!
