Title: Low ratio onthe road? Disco II V8
Post by: BRO on February 05, 2010, 16:14:10
Seem to have a problem with my new transfer box setup - it will now not engage high ratio and just about connects with low ratio! The specialist who fitted it reckons a couple of minutes on the ramp will sort it - but he is 17 miles away

How fast can I run it on the road in Low ratio? - is a 'non LR' specialist likely to be able to sort the problem? EEEKKK - Help please!

Not sure if they changed the gear ratios on the Disco 2, but top speed in low 5th on mine is about 20mph!

A decent general garage should be able to fix it, assuming it's a proper mechanical linkage.

Ive had this problem when changing a transfer box,for some reason the bar that connects the gear stick with the lever on top of the box has had to be extended or shortened to suit the new box, which isnt a problem unless you have put it all back together to find out.You basically have to remove the bar and adjust it,until you can select high and low.Its easy but fidderly!! This typical of some back street garages, you have to test after the job is done, when i did mine it drove fine in low but jumped out of high, just had to lenghen the bar so it engaged properly>

you need to shorted it to get more throw into high range
extending it gives it more throw into low range
if you change transer box's you cannot expect the adjustment to be the same, after all they have all done different miles , and been in high and low different amounts of times so the clutch dogs are worn different
