Title: Computer techie question
Post by: Colin 009 on April 14, 2005, 16:39:39: Hi All, help after fitting a new video card my computer has stopped making sounds,

everytime I boot up and get to the welcome screen (XP) a box comes up telling me that "mplayer.exe" has had to close.

Help please.

Post by: V8MoneyPit on April 14, 2005, 16:53:50: Mplayer.exe is the Windows Media Player program. It sounds like it is trying to execute during startup. Not sure this should happen. Try running the WMP program from the start menu. Does it run OK?

There are some viruses that rename this file and then copy themselves to mplayer.exe. Might be worth updating your virus scanner and running a full system scan just to be safe before you do anything else.

Post by: muky-kid. on April 14, 2005, 19:38:24: :D I now use program called spybot which can be found and downloaded for free from http://www.download.com . Once spybot is downloaded onto your p.c a simple click on the Search and Destroy button, and it automatically goes searching through every single file and program on your p.c for anything that is contaminated with a virus. When i first did this it took about 2 hours bacause ide never run a virus checker as good as this before, and out of 23,000 files it found about 300 with something wrong on them, so i then clicked on the solve problem button and the spybot program destroyed the problems for me and restored the files or got rid of them altogether :D . I now run spybot every 5 days or so and it only takes 10 mins now to do, and my p.c has never been so fast before i did this. Its name is Spybot Search And Destroy. :D
Its better than my Zone Alarm Pro for detecting viruses. :D

They are friendly bunch and will help you solve all technical issues. Just state clearly your system specs if you know them, your Operating system and what the problem exactly is and when it occured. Try them you won't regret it.

That alot of "nerds" online at once. :lol:

Over the weekend will have a look back in the box to just check the connections. it could be that simple. :roll:

Go to the makers website and download the required one or see any cds you had with the card

I found Spybot tended to miss some stuff, but Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) (free for personal use) was more adept at picking up malware in general. (Now I use a Mac so don't have to worry about this crap :))

Personally I'd go Windows Update as a first attempt to fix.

Post by: gnasha on April 15, 2005, 09:28:35: still b best to get latest update from grafix card main website as windows drivers are not good at all and try updateing to latest version of Windows Media Player i am on ver 10 and also youre sound card drivers again from the site who makes the sound card

Maybe you had a combined sound/video card and you have thrown it out when changing the old card.

Post by: TechnoTurkey on April 15, 2005, 11:08:16: Right, as an ex techie I would say that you have corrupted your sound drivers when you video card installed its drivers automatically, however all is not lost thanks to the joys of WinXP.

Click Start -> Help & Support -> Undo Changes to My Computer Using System Restore.

Then restore your computer back to a point in time prior to you installing your video card.

Once thats done then download and install the correct manufacturers drivers for your new video card and all should be well.
