Title: TD5 WONT START, frozen?? diesel pump?
Post by: footballshmootball on February 23, 2010, 21:46:37
so parked my disco 2 td5 up last night after a hour drive, went out this morning and wont start, turned over a few times then battery started dying. got the jump leads out and put ignition on and could hear the diesel pump making a noise like is could be frozen solid, to turned it over and it started for a few seconds then cut out. now its just turning over and over. its about -5-10 here. any obvious ideas??

try giving the fuel filter a few whacks with something heavy, then try and start it. if it works a new fuel filter could be needed. only takes a minute, so probably worth a try

try the fuel filter as surgested then cheack for oil in the red plug on the ecu if there is oil a new injector wire will be needed 35 -40 quid off ebay also sounds like your battery has seen better days
and sorry to state the stuid but has it been filled with petrol or is there plenty of diesel in the tank

yeah plenty of diesel, gave the filter a whack but will need to try again with another battery on

Probably just needs a new battery, TD5's are power hungry, i have seen them turn over briskly but not enough power to get the ECU to fire the injectors properly

is the pump whirring loudly? or not at all? i`ve had the same problems lately, i need a new pump so gonna replace the filter at the same time. were you low on diesel? have you had the pump out for inspection? its easy to remove and check so it might be an idea to check it hasnt got a clogged filter. let me know if you need guiding through it but it might be a good starting point

Was thinking of checking the filter on my pump.  Am I right in thinking that the easiest way to do this is to cut a hole in the rear carpet to gain access?

just cut a hole in the carpet and remove the access panel, clean off the reccess in the tank then unscrew the metal collar holding the pump in
be carefull undoing the fuel lines they break very easily.

what kind of noise is the pump making ?
disco's are prone to pipes waring through over the top of the chassis and letting air in.
any obvious leaks ?
any leaks around the regulator on the block....is the engine a 10p with internal rail or 15p with external ?

well i didnt cut a hole, just take the plastic surrounds from the dickie seat catches(4xscrews) and pull up the carpet as its only tucked under the plastic trim. as extreme90 says, clean around the hand nut, disconnect pipes(pliers may be handy) and pull off the connecter block, undo the handwheel and the pump will probably spring up, then remove, being careful of the fuel level sender arm. then just reverse the process to refit making sure the big rubber washer on the pump gets fitted in properly, or the handwheel wont tighten.

ok so my problem was that there was a tiny hole in the fuel filter and was causing an airlock!! new filter on now and runnin, now got a leak from one of the pipes attached to the filter now tho so that needs sorted!

you can buy replacement pipes are there only nylon air pipe internally so they rub through very fast over the top of the chassis

Hi Mate,

Is this happens again check the crank sensor, the same thing happend to me before christmas and I was told it was the fuel pump...I bought a new one for £235...After I fitted it, it still would'nt start, I called the AA and the guy put his laptop on to it, it did'nt show a crank speed when it turned over, so he put it down to that, I bought a new one, primed the fuel system a few times and it fired up a treat..jobs a good un...Also if there is ever a diesel leak around the back of the engine bay, then it is almost 100% the fuel pressure regulator...a new one is around £105...a pig to fit aswell, it took me nearly 3 hrs...the gasket was a pig to line up with the holes cause you cant really see the bottom one...

just some helpful advice for the future from a fellow TD5 owner

Regards, Terry
