I'm having some trouble with starting the disco 300tdi. the starter (a re con replacement) packed up the other week. it was the 3 gear cogs that just disintergrated. I've since got a second hand 'Bosch' from a scrapyard. the thing is it only just turns over the engine and drains the battery within seconds. about 10/12 secs on continues starting. it also fells very hot. understandable. I've checked/changed the brusher's, solenoid and motor part but with no difference. could it be something else. it never drained the battery this quick or felt as if something was restricting it. Help.
i may be replacing the motor with a early model 300tdi. where should i look for one and where could i get it reconditioned. Thx Ian
p.s it has ECU, think this may be something to do with it. how would i know if its knacked

I have had this problem a few times. I could be wrong but the starter moter is the first point of power so i dont think it is anything to do with ecu. cheak the earth straps to the starter they may look fine at first glance but often they are roten and dont have very good contact. get them of and clean them up. you may very well have 12v going to the starter but if you dont get a good ground you dont get any amps to give that boost to start. get some coper grease on all the contacts and it should be sweet.

Out of interest, try connecting a voltmeter between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine, then crank it up. Do the same between the positive terminal and the starter motor terminal.
You might be surprised, if you are you might also have an idea where to look next........
