I don't think earlier 90's and 110's had the VIN stamped on the chassis at all! Late Defenders, certainly into the 2000's, had it stamped on the outside of the chassis near the steering box IIRC.

Edit:
Just found something that suggests the VIN was stamped on the chassis after 1994.

My 90 is 1985 and the chassis number is stamped near the steering box, you can see it from under the wheel arch.

Vehicles after 1980 must have a VIN somewhere on the vehicle for the MOT. If you also have the plate on the pedal box, this will be OK for the MOT.

used to be the case with a kit car you simple stamp the chassis yourself or stamp a plate and rivet it on after a traffic cop came around and issued it. My issued plate for the chassis were lost and after the vehicles maybe 7th MOT it was picked up on and tester was happy about the DIY alloy plate I attached with the number stamped on for the re-test. Just looking for presence of the correct number on the chassis not how it's presented (illegally changing the identity is another matter).   Still haven't found the number on my Series LR and the MOT get's it off the computer instead

That's right. As long as the VIN is on the car somewhere, it seems fine for the MOT.

I put a new chassis on, but the plate is still present on the pedal box.

this might be a silly question but will my landy have some sort of Vin stamped on the chassis? it has the plate pop rivitted to the pedal box! its an ex military 110 the normal military data tag witch is normaly on the drivers seatbox is missing! so will it have something stamped on the chassis
