Title: Freelander 2 alternatives
Post by: 3laner on March 12, 2010, 19:58:08
Been looking at getting a freelander 2 but also want to consider the alternatives. I do alot of road miles so need something that drives well. semi decent off road for when I go shooting+on clients farms etc and reasonably economic. budget is 13-14000. so far i've drawn a blank as to anything apart from the freelander that can offer all those things.
Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm in the same situation! I have looked at the following:

Kia Sportage, expensive VED rates, poor fuel consumption, but 7 year warranty.
Kia Sorento, too expensive for what it isn't.
VW Tuareg, too expensive, poor boot.
Volvo ??, too expensive, not brill off-road.
Suzuki Vitara, tinny, poor boot, poor towing.

Skoda Yeti, most impressed, reasonable boot, comfy drive, good VED rates for the diesels, fair off-road capability, good price.

I am stuck with a toss up between an ex demo Freelander2 or a new Yeti.

Look at a Toyota Land Cruiser 90 series. Maybe even a 120 series.

I understand they are now taking ordersfor the DSG (auto)diesel models now.
Agreed about the website, but the broucher is better.

to be honest after looking at the alternatives I keep going back to the freelander 2 but at least I can say I looked at the alternatives!

I'm finding it is very close between the Yeti and the FL2. I'm just waiting for a Skoda dealer to let me loose off road with a Yeti, but they all seem a bit wary!
I've had a half day at Eastnor with the FL2 and was very pleased with that.

I agree the Patriot and X-Trail usually do OK in reviews, F2 allways wins off road though. Yeti is a very tempting concept as the interior space is HUGE, but I think they get expensive if you want 4x4 (only on the top model). I would expect the running costs of a yeti to be very good. I tried to convince my wife she should get one (and stop knicking my freelander)

Id guess F2 will hold its value best (thats a big guess) as the brand is good

I have recently taken delivery of a Yeti as a company car, got to be honest i'm very impressed it drives so well + you can even choose in the "Factory options" for a OFF ROAD PACK - which gives you a sump guard, fuel tank guard etc....how cool

I've not seriously taken it off road, but have been shooting in it and driven down some local lanes in it, as a all rounder it's very good.

Besides it's a cool name!

Good to hear. I'm still waiting for a dealer to let me test one properly.

Have you looked at the Yeti section of the Briskoda Forum? Some good things come up on there.

FL2 all the way...

Got one for the Fun Prevention Officer and it's done 46,000 miles in 30 months... we've put washer fluid in one end and diesel in the other.

It's towed the horse trailer (probably well up to 2 tonnes with 2 x Welsh Section D's... ) and dragged Shogun type things out of fields, all on standard road tyres.  Has also been OK on long wet grass (pony camp, shows etc etc..)

With all this abuse, the interior has stood up well to mud and dirt (although we did invest in a boot liner and LR rubber mats.

I know Lee has his X-Trail (and it is a good bit of kit...) but Niki is already looking out for the next FL2
