If you leave them off they will rust from dirt and salt being sprayed on them.

If you leave them on they will rust from dirt being trapped in the gator.

I don't use them as they fill with mud and water.

It's a lose/lose situation!

I cut my boots off about two years ago as they kept filling with silt and water, I changed the rear shocks for longer one's recently and the shafts on the old shocks are fine, no corrosion or chipping, so on that basis I wont use the boots again ;)

The old shocks are now in uses on another truck.

If your rallying around on a comp safari I would be inclined to use the boots to prevent gravel/stone flying up and damaging the shaft but otherwise, baldy shocks for me

I cut them in half so there's enough boot to protect the shaft from gravel rash but not enough to reach the body all the time and seal in muck, I've found it to be the best compramise but the one thing i didlike about ProComp is how badly the pistons rust. I don't think they are chrome plated so much as made in a factory where chrome plating is known to have taken place.

RRB is right, the chroming on the rods is poor - they should never rust so much so quickly.
I've smeared the upper portion of mine with copper slip, this will protect them in normal use and therefore no rust to damage the seals when used off road when the rod travels further.
