Help needed from anyone running a 2.5 diesel in a 90, 110, series or Range Rover, or any general diesel experts...
To recap, removed the TD that was shot, fitted a 'very good running' NA that had been stood,
Wouldnt run as Injector pump seized inside, freed off reassembled etc
Will not start on key even after several bleeds
Will tow start and idles lovely with no smoke
developing no power, tops out at 40mph if lucky suggesting pump timing
removed timing belt cover to find
a) all three punched dots line up with arrows at same time on all cogs
b) there is an 'F' inscribed with a line one tooth from the punched dot on the injector pump wheel...what is it?
c) the injector pump wheel and Cam wheel have a painted blue spot 1/4 of a turn from the punched dots painted onto the tooth, if I move the injector pump one tooth so the F lines up with the arrow not the dot then both blue paint marks point vertical in synchro..
I have tried to search the archive with no luck on injector pump/pump timing etc etc so help.... what is correct, what are the other marks likely to be???

i'm pretty sure the timing is set the same way as a 200tdi
if so...
removing bell houseing wading plug, glow plugs and the samll cover on the front of the timing case.
Crank the engine round till #1 cylinder is at teh top of its compression stroke, you should then be able to see the timing mark on the flywheel through the hole fo rthe wading plug. next you should be able to insert a a drill of similar through the timin ghole in the end of the fuel injector pump drive wheel.
There are some exact dimensions for a lockign tool and pump timing pin but i don't have them
BAsically if the flywheel mark is locked with the small pin and you can insert the timing pin into the end of the pump wheel the timing is spot on, if not.
On the side of the pump near the timing case is a large nut with a plate behind it, remove the nut and plate and inside is another bolt head, tighten this (this is the pump spindle lock), once you have that tighetned, undo the bolts on the fuel pump pulley and remove the flywheel locking tool, now gentlyrank the engine round till the injector pump timing pin acan be inserted. retighten the pulley bolts, undo the spindle lock and replace plate on the pump, then crank engine back round to #1 TDC as before, you should now be abel to insert the flywheel lock and the pump timign pin

On the timing issue, I have a 2.5 Diesel NA engine in mine, it starts OK (not long been in) runs sweet, however took it for its first real run and it started kicking out puffs of white smoke. This I believe is unburnt fuel. I adjusted the fuel injector pump which reduced this somewhat but the problem is there is now no more adjustment available and there is still the odd puff of smoke especially on start up. I am hoping that this is just the injectors coming back to life but not sure, any advice?

I assume the pump itself is OK. I spent hours trying to time my N/A only to discover the pump was shot.
