my dad got some hd steering bars for his discovery 300 tdi but they are about 6" short :-. so just a quick question is defender bars smaller if not what could they be for
-
Which bit is too short? Theyare usually sold as pairs with one that holds the wheels parrelel( track rod), and the other runs from the steering drop arm which is attached to the steering box (drag ling)
-
i have came across this recently... i think what it is, the drag link has 2 track rod ends on it instead of one track rod end and one end with a duble bend on it thus making the drag link look like a short track rod if you get what i mean.

To elaborate there is two different sets out there. And as they are advertised as either with 3 TRE's (Track Rod Ends) or with 4.
The sets with 4 are for the Disco and RR that have the drop arm that you bolt a TR too. Or else there is the set's with 3 ends that has a swan neck which is used to hold the Steering damper and this has the taper hole in it to accept the ball joint on the end of the drop arm.
I would check that you have the right set. It's a little late for me to pop out and measure my set though. :(

dude i know the answer to this you could of rang me

As Devon rover siad, untill about 1992 the steering box drop arm had a balljoint in it and the front drag link had a swan neck screwed into the LH thread. From about 1993 on and certainly the 300 series/softdash models they had a standard balljoint attached to a straight drop arm, the fornt drag link is longer.
At the back, the only difference is that a RRC/Disco had a 2 peice track rod with 2 RH threaed balljoints and a LH threaed adjuster so that the steering damper allways lines up. Defender has no damper so can have a single poiece track rod with one LH threaded balljoint.
After market H/D kits almost always have the Defender style, a bracket can be bought for the damper.
