Title: 4x4 avoids nasty accident
Post by: davidlandy on April 17, 2005, 20:34:54
Today I nearly ran over a little girl on a barbie scooter. she ran out from behind a parked car with her scooter, luckily I was high up enough in my 90 to be able to see to top of her head and brake just in time. If I was in my car I would had certainly have collided with her.

Are you listening Antis?

it was on a housing estate near Muskies place, not a main road.

she was no older than 6 at a guess, parents no where to be seen, - what supervision eh.

lucky I wasnt going too fast and could stop in time.

Stomach churning isn't it.

I braked and had a little girl touching my front bonnet when I stopped. She ran out for her bus. It was that close I was shaking like mad and pulled over to the side of the road to calm down, the guy in an Audi behind got out and actually thanked me for sticking to the 30 speed limit, otherwise he would have killed her.

I actually wrote to my local high school, asking them to teach there kids the high way code again. I was looking to my right at a mini roundabout completely clear, went to set of and a kid was holding onto my A Bar crossing on a roundabout.

this happens all to often and it scares me i'm so glad i drive a 4x4 if had been in my old escort then i would have most probably hurt someone thanks to old joe he has realy slowed me down and i work harder on concetrating than racing.

all i can say is be safe be careful and keep your eyes open.

Dazza

The fact you didn't kill her is a credit to your observation and driving.

I've said it time and time again.... the vehicle type doesn't cause the accident, or prevent it.

Teach the kids how dangerous roads are...  then we might actually start to reduce road deaths again.

Well done to you.  Most of us have children but as has been said, where was the supervision and especially near a main road?  I'm what's known as "an older parent" - didn't have my daughter until I was 33 and she's now nearly 14    But, I've taught her, as we were taught back then, LOOK AND LISTEN - don't cross between parked cars, etc, etc.  But today, things are different, a bit slap dash for my liking :?

Quite agree I was brought up living right next to one of the main roads into leeds, and crossed it every day for school from the age of 5. I soon learnt about road safety and when I was older it was very obvious that my observation when crossing the road was much keener than most.

that estate can be a bit bad, most of the kids around there are playing football and such in the road, in an afternoon working on my brother car you are bound to hear one or two tyre screeches as someone has to do an emergency stop, but still the kids just carry on the same :( lucky our lad prefers being up to his elbows in mud rather then kick a ball around on the road and we live in a quiet area with no through roads

has anyone seen Tufty or them hedghogs recently ?

can someone with spoglets please reassure me this stuff is currently being taught in schools ?  Since it seems painfully apparent that we can't rely on some parents to teach their little darlings

It gets my goat that the road outside is now a playground whilst I'm paying council tax for 2 playing field on this road alone!  kids don't seem to give a damn and their parents seem to think that's how it should be.  We've moved into a world where the car is a tool of Satan and carries all the blame for the woes of the world.  Whatever happend to stop, look, listen?   It's not PC enough.

Anyway, with a 2" lift you have plenty of "pedestrian escape volume" beneath your car don't you? and according to the test on 5th gear a pedestrian will suffer less fatal injuries from a Land rover or Range Rover than from a passenger car, on account of it spreads the impact accross the whole of the pedestrians body rather than knocking the legs out from under them with a low front bumper before catapulting their head into the windscreen wipers.  But hey, who's going to let the facts spoil a good arguament anyway, people hate 4x4s and it's mainly jealousy, I've made my views on that well known before.........

Our 3 year old has brilliant road sense. Whilst stood waiting to cross I said to her 'lets wait till that car has passed and then its safe to cross' to which she replied 'but daddy its a van you muppet'

our local tesco car park is like a race track, no speed bumps just nice new tarmac, the boy racers love it, its only a matter of time before somebody gets hurt but parents just seem to let their kids wander about as though its some sort of safe haven perhaps its the parents that need to go back and learn about road safety too instead of leaving it others and pointing the finger of blame when somebody gets hurt :!:  :!:
