Title: defender steering wheel
Post by: jasonforsythe on April 11, 2010, 21:49:00: hi guys got the nut off the wheel but how do i get the wheel of the shaft? it says i need a special tool any ideas ,thanks in advance j

you can make a simpler one by doing away with the big bolt in the middle and just having the bit of flat bar with two longer bolts either side with a nut on each above the flat bar. the end of the bolts goes into the two threaded holes on your steering wheel and then tighten the two nuts down a bit at a time on each and the wheel will pop off

Post by: Saffy on April 11, 2010, 22:14:01: worth trying to use even and repeated palm thumps on back of wheel towards you while sitting in seat - but keep the nut in place (loose) just in case it work and breaks your nose.

pretty sure the splines changed from the 300tdi defender models onwards. Previous models are interchangeable

Post by: Disco-Ron on April 20, 2010, 19:26:10: I have never yet failked to get a wheel of any car by putting my knees tight up on the underneath, and then, with the nut still on the shaft enough to not leave the threaded part of the sdhaft showing, give it a decent whack with a hammer..... squarely of course, cos you don;t wanna damage the thread or not etc............. don;t do it with no nut, if it comes off, you could well be wearing the wheel!!

Post by: william127 on April 22, 2010, 23:59:48: for a defender i loosen the nut but leave it on the shaft, grip the wheel near the boss, tighten my arms and stand up straight, wheel slides straight up as you stand.

Post by: Lumbering Jack on April 26, 2010, 16:47:51: Last one i did I used a piece of flat bar and two G clamps - took the tension up and a tap on the piece of bar and it popped off. No amount of pulling by hand was gonna shift it as the whole column was moving.
