Title: 300tdi Auto Sorting a few problems, Oil leaks?
Post by: lightweight-love on April 17, 2010, 23:59:19
Hi all I'v recently bought a 300 auto Disco and iv got a few questions as I get used to my first Auto.
Is it normal for the auto to stay in first for the first 100meter or such? I pull away and it will just rev in first until iv gone down the road a bit and then its fine.
Cheers for any info

MORE QUESTIONS FURTHER DOWN!

not shure but you could try changing your transmision fluid as i had to do it on a ford auto to cure a simalare problem

I think lurch has the right idea, or it might just be that the fluids are low and need topping up. Check your handbook to see how to check the fluid.

Chamge the filter and then the oil.  Swapping the oil once gets 5 out of 8 litres, it takes 3 full changes to effectively replace all the oil.  If it's done regulalry this is not a problem but too many people ignore it 'till it's too late.

Hi

I think you will find it is the governor sticking in the back of the gearbox, you can replace this without removing the gearbox just remove the transfere box & remove the back gearbox housing, you can then gain access to remove this unit, make sure you are very clean in carrying out this operation.

Oil is up to the right level and looks real clean, but will change soon to see if helps not that big a problem now I'm used to it.
Next question: The engine is leaking oil around the sump so will drain oil and replace the sump seal are there any tips to doing this? original/new fancy seals etc?
The engine also leaks from a plastic part on the O/S on the engine block about half way up? Not sure what it does I'm used to simple series! Any ideas?

This plastci thing, is it cylindrical with a couple of pipes coming out of it and fateded to the rocker/cylinder head? if so it an oil mist trap, they always leak.

Or is it on the back half of the block, in which case it might be the vacuum pump.

Or is it anywhere near the oil cooler pipes, I'd advise checking the condition of these because my sister's went and dumped oil all over the road, luckily it happened at the bottom of the village not on the A1.
