don't no if this in this right place but at it is the same for all i will put it here.
(since getting hand car wash the other day i now have no paint)
i have got a 1998 disco and the paint has blistered in quite a few places now mainly round the botom of the doors and wheel arches just wondering what my options would be? if i just sanded it down to bare metal then acid etch primed it then top coat would it stick ok? would it last ok? or do i just sand and prime the bad bits and put alloy checker on them??
what do you think guys and gals????

Since getting a hand carwash you have no paint?

I have exactly the same problem - it isn't caused by the carwash but by LR paint finish (or the terrible quality thereof). Basically the aluminium corrodes under the paint, causing it to bubble and flake off. Usually you notice it for the first time after using a jetwash on the car, in my case it seems to be around wheelarches and where the upper door frames meet the lower door.
I'm planning to have a go at sorting mine over the summer, by chipping off the loose stuff, rubbing down behind, masking liberally and then priming before touching up with matched aerosol from Halfords. I know I can get a decent paint finish this way, just hope I can blend it in to the rest with enough T cut!

cheers for the advice. I didn't no if the paint would blend ok with the old, also would it need acid etch primer or could you get away with normal primer??

when I had a rover 620 in flame red I had rust areas that I sanded down once a year and primed and sprayed over with a can from rover. It blended in very well when my neighbour did it. I am shocking at spraying things! :lol:

Not sure about the primer. I think you would need etch primer, but the only large metal things I've painted so far are five alloy wheels (where a good clean and rub down then plain old "high build" primer followed by fine sandpaper did the job). I'd be interested to hear what people recommend too as while I can prepare a surface and get a decent finish with aerosols I'm not entirely sure what I should be using. I might try plain primer on one area and leave it for a few weeks to see how it holds up - surely if you prepare the surface properly and make sure the paint is applied in thin coats then it'll stick?
My worry with etch primer is whether masking tape and newspaper will stop it from wrecking the surrounding area - I don't want to respray the whole thing! :lol:
