Title: 200tdi starter
Post by: nismo2004 on April 18, 2010, 11:00:12
Hi guys the starter on my 93 200tdi has been playing up for a while now, occasionaly just clicks so im guessing it needs an overhaul or replacing.
i have removed the contacts and cleaned them up wich has helped it play up less.

what i would like to know is hw easy is removal of the starter itself. my local garage seem o think that you have to unbolt the exhaust manifold them move aside to allow removal of the starter.
is ths true or do i just undo the 3 bolts and pull it out.

any advice would be good.

thanks
paul

You can get it out without touching the exhaust but it is a swine to do.

One of the bolts is v. awkward to get at took about 20 mins with a flexi headed ratchet spanner little bit at a time.

Not impossible though! Good Luck.

Oh and IIRC it goes down and out under the car.

as said it's down to get it out plus the fiddle to get the nuts/bolts undone, i had to drop one off my spares motor the other week due to mine packing up and stranding me at midnight ...

i've since opened my "duff" one and freed off the brushes (corroded in holders) and cleaned the commutator, it now works fine on the floor so is on the shelf as a spare again

before changing your starter check and duble check all your earth straps as at first glance thay seem fine. clean them up with sand paper coper greas them and bolt up tight. If your motor dosent get good amps it will just tick and act up. If it does need changing its a peice of cake with the right tools.. you can do it with a cuple of socket extension bars behined the exhaust manifold and work it from near the altinator.
