Check the treads for jammed stones , They make a clicking noise when your on the black stuff and the sound comes in through the drivers window reflected off parked cars and walls and stuff ,, could be in any of the tyres (but not the spare) :D

might not be a stone. I have a 'clicking' from near the steering wheel on the motorway and it turns out to be the trim. When I get to certain speeds, the plastic rubs/rattles against another bit of plastic and sounds really odd, It goes when I slow down

Have you done any work in that area recently? Changed brake pads, wheel bearing or anything?
Possible causes...
Rattling brake pads (some aftermarket one's do for some reason)
Wheel bearing on its way out

Had a word with a mate at his tyre depot and he says swap the wheels with the spare one at a time as sometimes the tyre can delaminate and the layers can slap together ( like when you get a leather belt double it over and pull the ends fast you get a slap noise ) ie a gap opens when the fault is at the bottom and slaps shut when the weight is off..
worth a try and costs nothing :D
