About £150 per tonne, but I'm not sure if you get that for an assembled car, or only "sorted" metal.

Yeap, light iron is quite a bit higher than mixed scrap ie a car.

My mates always say it's when the local dealers "shut down" for the summer.  Demand always seems to slow and scrap dealers stockpile a bit too.  It always falls around the school holidays if not before :-k

... and yet only this morning we got a notification that the cost of new steel is going UP by £80 per tonne in June!

Thank you Corus... they reckon it's something to do with the price of iron ore but a more cynical man may suggest that they have kept the supply down so that they can (artificially) keep price momentum going...

Not bitter, but I have a project lining up that will need around 460 tonnes...

Update on increases...

The £80 increase is the wholesale price (direct from the Mill) in June alone...

According to the memo from 'The British Constructional Steelwork Association' steel prices have risen as follows:

March 2010: +£50
May 2010: +60

and now this latest rise - the expectation is that steel stockholders will be adding around £30 per tonne on top of these rises

Reasons include the increased demand from China and India, increased costs for iron ore extraction and coking coal...
