Title: It came off in my hand!!
Post by: gords on April 19, 2005, 22:28:23
I'm starting to wonder if my car is trying to tell me something ... set off driving this morning, came off a roundabout, changed into third ... oh dear, my gearstick appears to have fallen off

Pulled over and pulled off the gaitor and the top two thirds of the gearstick came with it   It has broken just above one of the joins - the join was still joined

So, I wrapped a bit of cloth around it and fixed it on with an elastic band - the oin was a bit sharp   It's awfully strange driving a Discovery with a gearstick that barely comes out of the center console - very strange

Got a replacement from a breakers in Scotland, hopefully coming tomorrow.

Don't ya just luv em

Dont think I will have that problem... mines an auto, none of that waggling about when trying to get up some speed

I wasn't even rushing or pushing it hard at the time - I just cruised (or should that be crept?) off the roundabout, gently slipped it into 3rd and the gear lever just flopped over

When I got the car, it had an annoying rattle which was traced to a broken join which had been badly welded and come loose. I had a friend weld it for me properly. The break was above this, where the gearstick joined onto the once-was join.

I'll take a pipcture or too later

1/2 piece of steel rod and you just 'gently slipped it into 3rd' and it 'flopped over'

Had a series snapped its stick, took it in for a temp repair, the fitter gave me a pair of mole grips and said come back later. :?

He had to get the welder set up.

The Escort bit brings back memories Paul.

My Capri was always doing it. Damn plastic threds on the fitting. They were also different colours across the ranges. It's good fun using a screw driver to change gear and everything had to be done in reverse. So first was actually right and down :) instead of left and up :)

What with bonnet catches failing it was certainly fun. A Capri bonnet certainly makes a big dent in the roof and it trashes the "power bulge"!
And digs a big hole in both ends of the scuttle panel.

Well, I have fitted the new gear lever and gear knob and what a difference it's made   Gear changes are now as smooth as silk, acceleration is much improved and road noise has been vastly reduced - not to mention the improved cornering ability :D

Yeah right...

It's nice, though, to have a proper length gearstick again :)  and nice that the gear knob stays put!!
