Yes - in this case you could spoil your paper ... doesn't count towards any of the candidates but does count towards the overall turnout and is recorded as part of the figures for your constituency.

If there were more people spoiling their papers than any of the candidates I'd say that would be a pretty clear message that none of them were representing "the people."

They dont count defaced papers.

The reason that the election has been media media media this year is becuase last time 40% of voters didnt ! Isn't that a loud enough voice for someone to take notice?

I think that they are all scum. I've met more than 1 of them too. I refuse to add my vote to any of them.

I do agree though, voting ought to be forced, and there should be a box always that has no confidence in it. Until that occurs or there is a general referendum I'm not putting my name to any of them.

(also means I can blame you lot when it all goes tits up again ;) )

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.

If they died for anything it was to give me the freedom to vote and with that I am free to choice not to use my vote if I wish. If I felt that freedom was endangered I would then choose to cast a vote or fight for it but as it stands the out come of this election is meaningless.

From - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/election_2010/8661984.stm in the "CAN I WRITE A MESSAGE TO THE POLITICIANS?" section:

"These kind of deliberately spoiled ballots are part of the British political tradition, are termed "rejected votes" and are included in the overall turnout."

Okay - so they're not included in the turnout for your constituency but they are still counted.

From what i gather in Australia you have to vote or you pay a fine!

They do however have a "none of the above" above for if you dont like any of them!

To all those that won't vote, the rest of us don't expect to hear any moaning about tax, petrol prices, immigration etc from you until the next general election [-X

If you won't go and voice your opinion, then you wil have to put up with what the rest of the country wants, whether that be right or wrong.

Apathy is not the solution my friends.

tax, petrol prices, immigration etc

ohhh those things are going to get effected for the better by voting then? will NERC get reversed if blues get in? which party is getting us out of europe, ditch the £ and taking on the $ and sell the country and beg to become a remote state of the USA where we take on their culture, freedoms and military might? That's the party I'd vote for.

Have you noticed how it is always somebody else's fault in today's society? "I couldn't be bothered to vote therefore it is somebody else's fault that the country isn't run the way I want it". At least when I put my mark on the ballot I can say "I tried".

Meh, it'll all be over in a few hours, then you get to spend the next 5 years complaining that they've screwed the country, britain aint what it used to be, ooo there's too many immigrants, unemployment is too high, wages are too low, not enough money in the nhs and schooling, and guess what, the same media bull again and it'll be another general election between tweedle dee and tweedle dum.

It's not cynicism, it's just how it is.

instead of moaning about the politicians, how about you standing for election ?

list your 5 top policies below...heres mine

1. economy. to tackle the deficiet i'd set certian tax rises to reduce it such as VAT upto 20% 2p/ltr on fuel 1p extra on income tax. a website set up displaying the deficiet and the money raised by the extra taxes, updated daily to show it coming down, this policy would run until the deficeit is reduced to managable levels and then the extra taxes reduced to 2009 levels

2. spending cuts. NHS and education budgets to remain unchanged, defence budget reduced to run specific task forces for certain situations, scrap trident do a deal with the yanks to let us "borrow" a nuke :) all MP's to reduce wages to 40k/yr untill defeciet is reduced with no expenses MP's local office to be run in local councill offices

3.crime. life to mean life, homeowners right to defend their property, burglers have no rights, the police get guns

4. europe. we trade with europe nothing else

5. immagration, doors closed, sorry, try again next year

its just to keep population at around 60mil, if we fall below that mark than a points based worldwide immagration policy would ensue to boost numbers back up to the 60million mark, i just dont think we have the land mass to cope with any more

And I think it's fair to say that the legal immigrants are not really the problem. It's the illegal ones and they will keep coming regardless of whether you close the door to the legal ones. Unfortunately, legislation of this type only penalises the people who operate lawfully. It can also increase illegal activity because some of the people who previously would have come in legally would then try to get here illegally.

Sound familiar? Changing byway status to stop illegal use of land........

I've never voted in my life. So, this time I did.
What a wasted effort, as the media directed all the sheep towards the Tories.
What's the point in all the other parties..., they'll never get in, because it always has been, and always will be the Conservatives or Labour who take power, which is why i've never bothered to vote.
We might as well be like the Americans, and just have a two party system.
All our politians do is feather their own nest, while the great unwashed get humped for taxes, and the rich sit smugly back in luxury.
I'll never vote again.., cos it makes no difference.

Abstinence makes my heart grow fonder.
