Title: help identify my oil leak - pictures within
Post by: tomkbucks on May 21, 2010, 21:33:42
when i stop im getting about a teaspoon of oil dripping off the diff, last week i gave the top of the engine a quick clean so i could identify were this ' drip' was coming from , the oil breather is oily as are both the pipes (though not to bad ) does the oil breather leak ? as you can see in red, the oil seems to collect and move down to were its circled in blue and arrowed, this then drips down behind the oil filter , its a tiny drip - but annoying enough , ive got no performance problems and have just changed the coolant / oil and all was as it should be, any ideas ?

well after a lot of reading around sounds like it may be that the engine oil breather filter needs cleaning and a new o ring - will do this tommorow !

right have taken off and cleaned up - replaced the oring - as you can see from the pictures hot oil over time have marked the plastic ! clearly showing the route of the oil , one thing though , in the black circle at the top there is a hole , i cleaned it up and as i pressurised it with a hose water came out of this point - is it suposed to be fully sealed ?

Replacement filter is about £12 I think. Job done!

It is on the LR service schedule for renewal at possibly 60k.

yes but ive cleaned it , and pressure tested it with a hosepipe - water made its way out right at the top via a small gap in the pastic - should this happen ? its a breather unit so not sure if its supposed to vent via the top ??

ive had this on mine tryed cleaning it up but it still leaked  , under closer  inspection found that the two points where the pipe fits were slightly ovald and deformed from the previose owner over tightning the clips , replaced the unit and its been ok for over 4 months now
