Title: Disco 1996... Vibrations & not good ones ;)
Post by: hrh_dave on May 22, 2010, 13:26:06
The disco has developed a bad wheel vibration above 63mph... checked the bearing and they all seem fine... anyone any thoughts...

Cheers

Dave

I would say at that sort of speed it would have to either be the wheels out of balance or the swivel bearings, you may have to check the preload on them, i had this with my old d1 after i fitted larger tyres, it seemed there was no excessive play in them but when i checked the preload it was way down, it should be about 15 to 18 lbs with the swivel seal in place you may get away with just reshimming it if this is the problem rather than having to replace the bearings which is not a difficult job just a fiddly pain in the hoop!! hope this helps.

Hi.

You could also check your panhard rod bushes.

If you don't know this rod links the top of the front axle to the chassis, it runs left to right above the axle, has a bush in each end, stick a lever in the joint and it will show any wear in the bush.

Good luck, Dan

Mine used to eat bearings on one side until the swivels were replaced.

Changing the bearings (easy) would improve things but never get rid of it completely, but now it rides nice and smooth again*

*as smooth as a Disco can anyway.

What sort of vibration? wheel shimmy or floor vibrating for example.

Have you tried swapping wheels end to end? you might have a tyre that's damaged or going out of shape.  not remoulds are they 8-[
