Title: V8 stalling
Post by: big tim on July 28, 2010, 19:23:40
Evening guys i seem to be having an issue with my 1998 3.9 v8 auto disco. When starting the engine the engine fires up then dies down and stalls but when restarted it fires up as normal and runs fine . This problem has only been happing about a week or so. I have replaced the idle control valve about 2 months ago with a genuine item. I would be very grateful of any help to resolve this issue cheers Tim

possibly an air leak.  Depending on the engine management system it will start rich and not run full control over fuelling ubtill the MAF sensor gives a reading, so a faulty MAF, an air leak or sticky idle valve for starters.

Cheers RRB i did wonder if the MAF might be the culprit. Its the later hot wire type MAF if that's any help.

Has it got Lmabdas? if so try disconnecting the MAF and staring it up.

Yes it has lambdas and tried running with the MAF unplugged and it didnt make a massive amount of difference . I gather from this it could be the MAF on its way out then. Cheers Tim

It's one possibility yes, can you borrow one to try because if could be something else, the EFi will listen to the lambdas rather than the MAF apparently, but a dodgy MAF will  still cause problems.

The EFi compares MAF and throttle position readings for one thing.

Anyway, I just bought a new MAF for

Yeap. although it was running rich as hell for the MOT so it may need a tune-up, though it's possible the original one was modyfied I thought it ran fine with a spare used MAF.

I gave mine a clean with carb cleaner and it appears to have got rid of the problem for now.
