Hi folks
I need some advice, started to change the transfer box on my 1996 3.9 for a 1.2 90 box today .The 90 box has a square speedo
cable drive the existing box has a small plug in the roughly the same position. Is there a square drive under the plug, if not any ideas
as to a way around this problem ?.

Denzil,
Your 1996 Discovery has an electronic speedo and the Defender has a mechanical one.
AFAIK they're not compatible.

if both are LT230 boxes you should be able to swap the drives around, unless you mean by 'plug' a blank hole? - then no there is nothing underneath and there isn't any teeth on the driving gear either so can't machine blank to fit speedo drive.

Thank you saffy both 230 boxes, sorry I meant electrical type plug . I will carry on removing the existing box later if there is a chance I can swop the drives did not want to go to far if I was not going to be able to reconnect the speedo.

it's popular to retro fit the defender TD5 speedo into an older tdi defender and also the electro-mechanical speedo pickup need to be swapped with the tdi's mechanical pickup, so that's what I base the comment 'if both are LT230 boxes you should be able to swap the drives around'.

I've just fitted a B-W with electric speedo pickup. The mechanical one has a short stud that has to come out but the inner gear was a pefect fit and 10 minuted work (rusted stud) saw it all fitted and working.
Hard dash 3.9 RRC and Disco had an electronic speedo driven by a sensor bolted to the chassis leg and driven by a 6" speedo cable. The other end of the sensor can be used to drive a speedo cable ( VERY early 14CU/CUX equiped EFi cars had mechanical speedos).
