Title: Chipped td5 snapping studs on manifold
Post by: disco2 td5 on October 17, 2010, 13:02:30
I know the way to fix is machine out the webs on the manifold and replace the studs with better ones but I'm wondering if there's enough metal to drill out to m10 studs and fit them instead of 8mm thanks

Not sure on drilling out but there is a stud conversion available (can't remember where)

Is your's remapped or a plug in box?
The autologic remap runs quite hot which does not help the warping.
I replaced mine with a ceramic coated one :-)

It's a plug on box
Also running about 25 psi boost
D44 centre box removal pipe
D44 side exit exhaust
Erg removal kit

I only notised it had broke a stud because it were ontop of the engine cover

What I were thinkin of doin were drilling out to 10 mm then using 10 mm bolts with spring washers also grinding away the webs and skimming the manifold

I belive its J.E engineering that does the studs and bobbins for A TD5 exhaust manifold

I've seen them about and I've wondered what putting bobbings and longer studs does
The only thing I thought was it gave it more stud to take up the stretching forces

Quite possibly so, also they would become a barrier to heat?

heres a trick i used with my defender td5 with the same issue

i removed the manifold ... left the turbo attatched then mig welded a bolt to the stud  as the head is alloy the weld only takes to the steel old stud not the head  then i warmed it up and turned the old stud out didnt believe it would work myself but it did

ps common problem on td5 running big power they also warp the manifold too

good luck

try getting a proper map on it and not a crap plug in box
not had a issue with either of my td5's and there mapped to death

I've removed the chip box turned the boost down

I've also cut all the webs out of the manifold drilled out all the holes to take 10 mm bolts. Re fitted using 5 individual exaust gaskests

I'm still wondering weather it's worth getting it chipped in the ecu or weather to leave it
Because it only started snapping studs after I fitted the egr kit
