Title: what would you like in your ultimate off road site.
Post by: Topple on June 20, 2011, 18:51:58
Hello to all those that remember me !

After being active in Mud Club for a number of years, organising countless trips around the welsh greenlanes and The halloween bash & treasure hunt on Sailsbury plain to name a few.

I emigrated to Ireland 5 years ago and had little time for off roading, well I'm still in Ireland and looking to my new venture -

A purpose built off road facility :-)

Presently just fields with hills, water, forest, bog land & an small old quarry - plenty to keep people occupied and challenging including space for camping. Fantastic pubs nearby and good old Irish hospitality.

so the question thrown out there --

what challenges / facilities would you like to see in your ultimate off road site

Once up and running, you never know we can organise a mud club trip to Ireland :-)

Dont all rush at once !

Where abouts in Ireland are you based?
I was over for the Munster 4x4 Mid summer madness and Three Peeks events last year in Mallow / Charleville Co Cork.
The off roading was brilliant and the Irish are superb, all top people and great drinkers too
The only downside from Englands point of view is the cost of the ferry but you soon forget about that when you see the beautiful Irish countryside.

I would say keep the terrain natural, i don't like sites with big holes dug out and stupid tumps for people to drive over, but that's just my opinion.

As Jake said what area are you in? my mum emigrated 10 years ago to Boyle Co. Rosscomon.

Cheers Mark.

will definately have toilets, burger van camping and power wash  - even somewhere undercover to make those on the fly repairs !

I like the sound of this!

Am in Meath myself & off road with Leinster 4x4.

Are you talking Pay & Play site? If so fantastic! & good luck!

Toilets are always a bonus & plenty of bins around the campsite! Campsites always seem to attract rubbish!

Natural is certainly the way to go....take the mecca that is Drumclog!  :afro:

Keep us up to date, I'll certainly make the trip North!   :cheesy:

A good recovery plan. Someone to give trainning is needed (at a cost ;) )

Something for everyone. By all means have an extreme playground for the challenge 90s to winch around, but you need some more gentle stuff for absolute beginners and the less extreme vehicles.

Spectator areas near the more extreme bits might not be a bad idea, especially if you can arrange for them to be accessible via the gentler routes.

Nice spot Donagall. I move to Kent from Moira just over 3 years ago. I was a member of NI4X4club and done 2seasons of rtv trials in a 410 zook.
From a personal view, wheelchair accessible toilets would be good.
Best of luck with this fella.

OK, I WANT!

A Jetwash to clean vehicle before leaving. not just nice for the visitors but may help keep the road clean which anyone on a motorbike will thank you for.

Visitors area. Some "other halves" may not want to be out all day so provide somewhere to sit and drink tea etc like a portakabin

Tool Locker: Odd one this, but I wouldn't like driving with a big toolbox in the car but dont have a prepped vehicle that has defined storage tie-down. Id like to put tools etc in a tool locker (like the ones for building sites) that was mine for the day.

First aid, obviously

Wifi - Because the internet is ace and must be with us at all times.

Marked routes like with skiing "black runs" etc. Maybe have a common loop, but have specific branches for different levels of ability and "chicken routes" for less experienced/prepped vehicles. Decent Signage.

Non-4x4 parking

Plenty of tea and coffee. Try to get decent stuff not some ancient catering tin thats been open for weeks and tastes rank, people expect more these days.

Safety. Make sure the rote is well designed so that cars dont cross and you dont end up getting hit by some prat on a bend or falling off a slope onto you. Iv only done 1 off road day but years of trackdays tells me there is always some prat who causes an accident, ideally just their own.

Ok in disagreement from above.

No marked routes at all.

Why should someone else tell me which direction I can drive or if I can or can't try certain things. The best sites I've been too don't have marked routes and they all get positive comments because of it (Kirton, Drumclog, Devils pit, Holymoorside...)
