Title: Alternator???
Post by: john bean on May 02, 2005, 16:44:55
Hi All,
I have been offered a new alternator its a 100 amp for a 300 Tdi now the problem I want to fit it to my 200 Tdi all the mounting points are the same but it has a polybelt pulley and my 200 Tdi has single V belt is it just a matter of changing the pulleys over and a bit of rewiring

No, you'd better install a quick-release mechanism for the vee belt so that you can change it easily on a daily basis.

The older style of vee belt is limited to the amount of power it can transmit and a 100 amp alternator is beyond that.  We have an 80amp and I've had no end of trouble with it, I use the thickest belt that is availbleand have taken great care to ensure that both belts line up perfectly, if they don't I can shred a vee belt in about 30 miles.

Is it possible to change the 200 pulley’s over to the 300 Tdi pulleys because I am getting fed up of tightening them up?

OK, aside from the aforementioned weaknesses in the V-belt's power capability,  to the best of my knowledge, the pulleys should be interchangeable.  You need to make sure that the alternators are both from the same side of the engine.  On the older designs, you could rotate the casing on the alternator to accomodate left or right hand mounting, but a lot of the later ones are a single casting.

The thing to check is that the shafts are both the same diameter, and a similar length.  There are a few small variations in shaft size.

The biggest problem you might encounter will be if the V-pulley doesn't fall properly in line with the existing set up as that will cause the belt to run askew and give all sorts of issues.

I thought the pulleys from a 300 are of a different type not v but of the serpentine variety :?:

Yes... but they are interchangeable....  (you can unbolt one and put another one on in its place)... assuming the shafts are the same size.

Just change the pullys over that should be ok.
