I having problems deciding what engine to put in my 1984 90, im currently running a normaly asthmatic diesel that couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding. :(
Im not bothered about fuel economy :twisted: , but am worried about the water problems that V8's suffer :? .
The 200 & 300tdi options are just too expencive for me at the moment :x .
Can you convince me to get a V8 if so which one? :?:

Snce ur putting a salsbury out the back any v8 will do,as for the water thing
a bit of effective waterproofing & ive had mine up the bulkhead vents without a snorkel

Is it worth waiting to get my hands on a 3.9ltr V8 or should a 3.5ltr V8 be enough?

ive got a 3.5 in mine but as ever biggers better :twisted: :twisted:

3.5 is a great engine... readily available for good money, easy to maintain, plenty of scope for mods and upgrades.
The 3.9 is bigger and better, but more wonga too and some can be prone to water jacket problems :-(

Jasons just fitted a V8 to his TD defender
Whilst I am pro diesel, I must admit that it sounds the Biz, and dont go bad too.
A good value conversion £ for £
He passes me on the road, but I overtake whilst he is in a petrol station or limping out of a puddle!

The 3.9 is a nice engine though! :wink:
If you can't afford a Tdi then V8 is definitely worth a go and if no good 3.9s turn up soon, plump for a good 3.5.

I would myself go with the 3.5 v8 good old engine.

if mpg is no problem then v8, its worth it for that burble alone :D

Anyone know where I could get a good V8 :twisted: lump then & will it go on my LT77 gearbox?
Then I can burble like the rest of you :D :D

therein lies one complication... the LT77 you have will be the 4 cylinder version, so it won't be a straight fit.
If you can get an old RR with engine and autobox, that would be my favourite. Drop the whole lot in and get the benefits of the auto at the same time.
There is a chap near me selling a shed of a Rangie with 3.5 and Auto for 250 quid, so the money isn't too bad.

That sounds good tim, but im not so sure of the auto box, would that not cause problems with hill decent?
Also do you know if its road worthy one as I dont have means of trancporting it back to Eastbourne from Dorset.

I don't have too many problems with hill descents... it will be quicker than you are used to with the diesel anyway due to the lesser engine braking provided by the V8.
I don't know much about the vehicle to be honest, he only offered it to me on Monday and I didn't have a use for it.

Other thing is do i need to change the bell housing to accomidate the auto box?

No... the bellhousing is all part of the gearbox. You can pretty much take the whole thing and drop it in there. You would need to weld some new engine mounts on, but that would be the case for the conversion anyway.
