^^^ so does any other engine if its not properly maintained, only thing you have to watch out for is heavy breathing, excessive reek, will go n speek 2 my dad as he had 1 for ages without any probs apart from the crankshaft bolt coming loose

thanks v8 red, what was the outcome of the crankshaft bolt coming undone ? sounds expensive to me,

It wasn't Land Rover's finest hour... let's just say that ;-)
If you find one that has survived past 100K miles, it is unusual, and when they go they are scrap.. not worth rebuilding in my view.
When they are running, they aren't a bad lump in the 90... yes they are noisy and won't get you many speeding tickets.
For some reason, the crank pulley nut coming loose seems to be a common issue on them. I scrapped an engine that had happened to because the end of the crank had been damaged.

cheers tim thats that then anyone got a cheap tdi motor?
-
Completely disagree - I had a TD 110 for 8 years 180k on the clock - had it rebored ran as sweet as a nut - much quieter that the TDi's - reliable
Was well maintaned with regular oil changes - when I sold it the next door neighbour bought it and he's had no trouble with it
Like most things it comes down to maintainance and tlc

If that were the case, there wouldn't be so many dead TDs about.... I think you are one of the few exceptions to the rule, in my experience it isn't all that common to find people who sing the praises of the TD.
Our TD was serviced and maintained.... as was the TD in the in-laws 90... and it ran fine as I said... but when the inevitable time came, there was no great surprise and it went straight in the scrap bin.
You can't take a non-turbo engine and just strap a turbo on it, then hope everything is going to be OK... which is essentially what LR did.

There's a G reg TD 110 in my family that's done a lot of miles (will have to check but I think it's done over 150k) and not given an ounce of trouble in the last 6 years we've had it.
As Tim said, they're not fast - 86hp when new (i think) as against 200tdi & 300tdi 111hp, but if it's well looked after and serviced reguarly, it should run for a long time.
