Im in the (slow) process of removing the V8 and box from the disco.
Is there some sort of trick or tip out there for getting the bolts at the top of the bell housing out?
Its not possible to get to them from the top and from the bottom (with extension bars) it does not seem possible to get enough leverage ???????
(Im kinda self teaching myself car mechanics here!)
Anyways - I have 3 bolts at the top of the bell housing and the starter motor left to do and thats it !
Or should I be undoing the mounts and letting the box and housing drop down (tilt) to get better access ???
HELP !

you may find it easier to get to the bolts by undoing the gearbox crossmember and tilting the box down at the back, then you will need along extension toget to the bolts. to get enough leverage you could try putting a long t bar with a tube on the end or even a torque wrench! try holding the extension bar hard against the gearbox toprevent it from twisting off the bolts and slipping.
if all else fails where abouts are you, i'm sure someone nearby will offer assisstance.

Thanks I did wonder about tilting the box.
The cross member clears the box by some way though. Do you mean undo the mounts ?

i don't know about a v8, but when i changed the clutch on a 200tdi we unbolted the gearbox crossmember toget the gearbox out as we left the transmission brake on the back of the box and lifted it out complete, was a bit heavy and took two trolley jacks but not too bad a job!!!

Bang on Neil.
We used an rechargeable impact driver to undo them with an extention.

Thanks guys - on the 200tdi disco that iv got the box etc is actually mounted to the crossmember wheras on the V8 its not.
Im still thinkin that dropping the box slightly might be the way to go.
Im hoping someone will appear who is in the process also (but about 3 hours ahead !) might come along.
For a mechanical imbecile like myself this is a right headache !

Lift the body off, loadsa room

I took out the engine mounts completely then dropped the front of the engine down, put together every extension I have and layed somewhere under the middle of the car with them, totall sod of a job. For the top 2 I bent a 14mm combination spanner a little so I could get it in place on the bolts, then rested a piece of pipe on the open jaw end and hit the other end of the pipe with a hammer (LR special tool #1) from somewhere alongside the car.

If you can get a socket on it, loads of extensions and a couple of u/j's could be a way of doing it

I always drop the gearbox... by far the easiest way to do it IMHO

I don't get what you're saying about getting leverage with the extension bars, If the ratchet is not above the bolt head you will need to support one end of the ratchet with your other hand, this is why I ended up using so many extensions, so that I could reach both ends of the thing. Nip to Halfrauds and buy yourself a nice long breaker bar.

took the whole thing out in one !!!!!!!
engine, box, transfer - the lot !!!

i bet that was a bit tricky, not to mention 'kin heavy!!

put it this way;
Thank fook I have a forklift truck !
