Title: Damn Sodding Computers
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on May 19, 2005, 21:42:00
My PC has decided to play silly beggars again
It gets as far as accepting the pass-word for internet & then closes it down

AOL. Version 8.0
It gets to stage 6 & as 7 (opening) commences it shuts the programme down.

Not happy!!!

I'm using SMWBO lap-top at the moment, so if this situation continues I'll be restricted in useage.

Could it be an 'Internet Explorer' problem??

Possible problem??
Since we moved I can't find any of the CD's provided with the PC

Would a System Restore do any good??

Don't like 9.0, but it does have the advantage of automatically re-conecting.

I'll have to persuade SWMBO to ask their pet 'PC Geek' to call across (again), after all she does use it for work.Honest :D

(can't print from the lap-top, as I can't find the CD, so she puts it on a 'Dongle' & then uses this)

I would try a full virus scan as well as friend had similar problem but was due to a virus not browser/ISP

I dont like ANYTHING with AOL associated with it!!! Much prefer using anything else really.

If you ever suspect that Explorer is causing issue, you can load Firefox instead from http://www.mozilla.org and try using that. It doesnt cure evrything butis better in some ways than IE

Im running on version 9, never had any real issue with either 8 or 9  :?:

Does from time to time freeze, close then restart. Have you checked all your settings, anti virus etc.

If you use System Restore make sure you have backed up all those important files made after the restore point or you will loose them.

I often found shutting every thing down and restarting the PC cured most problems.

Well, chequered history of AOL asside...

Default solution in this case is to download a "spyware" searching type program, AOL is especially good at accepting these sorts of things, regardless of their advertising :-.

I would (in this order)

Empty the download cache / run the hard disk cleanup wizard that's in windows, it might not help, but then again, it might.

Check that your virus definitions are up to date & perform a virus scan

download a suitable spyware searching program, "spybot search and destroy" is suitably effective, although it does perhaps add more importance to cookies than I would.

try booting the machine in "safe mode", oddly enough this does more than fail to load the graphics drivers, why this helps is a mystery best left to Microsoft to explain, but hey ho :)

Once you've done that merry lot, get back to us if it's still no better :(

Thanks chaps.

I turned it off last night, that's another funny thing, it's started staying on

I've got it set to standby after 10minutes, but it hasn't been doing that for some reason.

However, on getting in (about 10minutes ago after coming back from the Fabias morning in the garage), everything has gone normally, it's opened AOL as it has always done.

Just a glitch??
